COMPLAINING has become an industry in our country. Pundits make millions complaining about athletics, complaining about the government, even complaining about the red-carpet clothing choices of B-list stars. The rest of us take cues from these pop-culture critics, and then voice complaints of our own.

LAST WEEK, I wrote about the signs women should look for to determine whether they're dating a temp or a full-timer. The reactions varied.

Because I'm feeling very optimistic about the Hawks. The local professional basketball collective is off to an excellent start, as they are 6-2 despite having played only three home games and having already gone on a West Coast swing. Josh Smith is showing inklings of making the jump. With the standard caveats about sample size, Smith is shooting 59% from the floor and is averaging 4.4 assists per...

INDIANAPOLIS – Jermaine O'Neal had 22 points and 12 rebounds against his former team, and the Miami Heat beat the Indiana Pacers 96-83 on Friday night. The Pacers traded O'Neal before the 2008-09 season as they focused on rebuilding with younger players. He was animated throughout the game, drawing a technical foul for hanging on the rim after a dunk and later smiling when Pacers fans booed him.

I HATE to blow the whistle on my fellow men, but I'm tired of seeing good women with guys who aren't up to snuff.

THE PHILLIES' World Series run has taught me that people do strange things to help their teams win. Some fans refuse to change certain clothing items, which is fine if the sporting tournament lasts for a day. But in baseball, a sport whose playoffs can last for weeks, the refusal to wash or change some garments can pose a danger to oneself and others.

THE HOUSE - The Pacers proved once again why they need Mike Dunleavy on Friday. The Miami Heat forced the Pacers to play a slower tempo and they made it difficult for them to get open shots. The Pacers aren't a team built on being able to create off the dribble (they're actually not built to do a lot of things). A player like Dunleavy constantly moves off the ball and causes the defense to react to...

I'M FROM Philadelphia, and I'm proud. It's not just because the Phillies are back in the World Series. Truth is, I've come to expect excellence from my hometown baseball team. It's not the cheesesteaks, either, although the grease orgy that passes for a Philly sandwich is a caloric delight that most cities are unworthy of serving.

THE FIELDHOUSE - The suspense over the starting shooting guard and center position is about to end. Pacers coach Jim O'Brien hasn't pulled out his permanent marker yet, but he's closed to doing it when it comes to naming his starting center and shooting guard. O'Brien said before Friday's easy victory over Houston that Roy Hibbert and Brandon Rush have the inside track on the starting center and shooting...
