(SuperSonicSoul will spend the day today reliving memories of Sonic great Gary Payton. Pete offers up the first piece, to be followed as the day goes along by the other two members of the SSS team. Feel free to add yours in the comments section.) Picking a singular Gary Payton memory is tough. Perhaps because he had so many great moments as a Sonic that they begin to cloud the brain, and picking out...

Words: Peter Nussbaum | Illustration: Rafael Calonzo Jr. How does it happen? How does a man so menacing, so scowling, so intense become so beloved? How does a brash youngster from Oakland by way of Corvallis become the most treasured player in four decades of Seattle basketball? So many questions, all coming back to the same answer. Intensity. Gary Payton’s given middle name may have been Dwayne, but...

Gary Payton, Boston Celtics: “Honey, check out this sweet Ray Allen jersey I got for just $4. Stop asking me to turn around! Why don’t you ever trust me? LET GO OF ME. I WANT A DIVORCE!” Just kidding; this guy would never get married. (Found in New York City.)

I have no personal attachment to the Seattle Supersonics other than loving to play NBA Jam with Shawn Kemp and Detlef Schremp. Also, I enjoyed watching the "Glove" aka Gary Payton play lock down d and talk trash during his Sonics career. There is no sane reason that an American city with 3.2 million area residents and a 41 years history of fervent fan support should lose their basketball franchise...

[From the FanPosts. A very fun and interesting read. -ed.] The events of the last few weeks has me thinking about the Seattle Supersonics of the 1990's. They had the #2 overall pick in the 1990 draft, which they used to select Gary Payton after Derrick Coleman went 1st overall. Payton joined a team that had just missed the playoffs with 41 wins after losing in the 2nd round the year before. He also...

For those of us stuck in the hinterlands, we could only experience the Sonic rally at the Federal Courthouse in Seattle vicariously. Judging by various reports, the crowd was upwards of 1,000 people, and - when you add in Xavier McDaniel and Gary Payton's combined presence - made for some gripping video on the local news. Hopefully, the rally will reach a national audience and let the rest of the country...

What’s so wonderful about this Monday’s rally at the Federal Courthouse in Seattle , is the fact that two of my heroes – Gary Payton and Xavier McDaniel – will be taking time out of their lives to come and show their support for the cause. Heck, if you haven’t rooted for the team in 15 years, isn’t a chance to see the X-Man reason enough to take off work early on Monday? Growing up rooting for the...

Game 7. June 2, 1996. It may have been twelve years ago today, but it seems like one hundred. Can it really have only been a little more than a decade since a Utah-Seattle matchup meant so much? Is it really possible that Greg Gumble mused that Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp were about to take the mantle from John Stockton and Karl Malone as the pre-eminent inside-outside tandem of the next decade? If...
