Last May, LeBron James was asked by his Cleveland Cavaliers teammate Ira Newble to sign an open letter urging China to change it’s relationship with Sudan prior to the Olympics. James declined, saying that he needed to educate himself about what was going on in Darfur before he signed something. At the time, people thought [...]

As mentioned earlier, the grade criteria comes in large part by impact on the season. A search using two different engines produced the photo below (and a small handful more, tops) of Ira Newble on the court in a Laker uni. That basically summarizes his affect on 2008's outcome. As for why he couldn't get on the court, I can't say for certain. On one hand, Newble was simply an acknowledged insurance...

LOS ANGELES - While a trip to China during the Olympics could be risky for Lakers forward Ira Newble , he's willing to go if needed to help bring awareness to China's involvement in the conflict in Darfur.

The children drew pictures of women with babies being shot in the back by soldiers, of helicopters and planes dropping bombs. Those pictures and the faces of the children who drew them remain sharp in the mind of Ira Newble, the Los Angeles Lakers forward who visited two refugee camps in Chad last August and heard stories from victims of the deadly conflict in Sudan's Darfur region. "They watched their...

Who knows if it means anything, but Ira Newble is active for tonight's game, while DJ Mbenga is in street clothes. Newble is known as a defensive stopper. He hasn't played much since signing in the middle of the season,...

The big news, the only news, really, is that Trevor Ariza will indeed be in uniform tonight. How much he'll actually play remains to be seen, but at the very least he'll play as much as Ira Newble, the guy he's replacing on the active roster. PJ said he's capable guarding little fellas or guys with more size, but given the length of his absence it's doubtful (at least according to Jackson) that Ariza...

It probably got a bit of attention when Ira Newble was still playing in Cleveland and circulating a letter to China about the genocide in Darfur that then teammate LeBron James refused to sign, but more is fine by me. The L.A. Times has gotten around to profiling the Lakers’ bench player (although not a [...]

Newble continues to use his limited platform to create awareness of the atrocities in Darfur. (And hey, look, he got LeBron to vaguely address the situation. It's a start.) © Marcel Mutoni for SLAM Online , 2008. | Permalink | 4 comments Add to del.icio.us Search blogs linking this post with Technorati Want more on these topics ? Filed under: Casually Obsessed Black Voices Blogs : Last year when Ira Newble was with the Cleveland Cavaliers he discovered the horrors that were happening in Darfur, a region in the African country of Sudan. After doing a bit of studying, Newble realized how the country of China... Read more

Trip to a Darfur refugee camp in Chad embeds the cause in Newble's mind. Among his activities have been sending a letter of protest to China for its role as a supplier to the Sudanese government. The faces haunt Ira Newble, their silent anguish sometimes drowning out the joyous noise of a Staples Center crowd, their looming presence a jarring reminder that genuine do-or-die struggles in life don't...

Filed under: Cavaliers , Cleveland , USA Basketball A year after getting blasted by everyone under the sun for refusing to sign a letter by Ira Newble condemning China for its role in the Darfur genocide, LeBron James is finally willing to talk about the situation. Even if he's not really saying anything. On Friday, James agreed to an interview with ESPN for Outside the Lines, and agreed to talk about...
