Redbird volleyball goes 1-1 in MVC play over weekend

An acrobatic kill by senior setter Erin Lindsey decreased ISU's deficit in the fifth set of Friday's match against Creighton to two points, but not without a seemingly heavy price. The awkward landing that followed sprained Lindsey's left ankle, forcing the preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference selection to leave the match.

Head coach Chris Hoover had high hopes coming into the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships, but the Redbirds were not able to come home with any singles or doubles titles. The Redbirds fell short of their goals in Des Moines, Iowa by coming home empty-handed.

As the ball was kicked off Saturday afternoon against Indiana State, the Redbirds' message was clear: establish the run game. ISU got out and running from the get-go and outgained the Sycamores 410-99 on the ground en route to a 57-6 Missouri Valley Conference win at Memorial Stadium in Terre Haute, Ind.

The ISU volleyball team hosted its first two Missouri Valley Conference opponents, playing Northern Iowa on Friday night and Bradley Sunday afternoon. Peggy Riessen's 15 digs and 20 kills on a .300 hitting percentage led ISU over Bradley Sunday afternoon in four sets (25-15, 25-12, 25-21, 25-18).

ISU soccer drops conference opener

Entering Saturday's game at Evansville, ISU had not lost a Missouri Valley Conference game since Oct. 29, 2006. The Redbirds suffered their most lopsided defeat of this year in their first MVC game. The Purple Aces scored the first goal 1:26 into the game en route to a 4-1 victory.

They play Iowa State at 11 a.m. and Ole Miss at 5 p.m. The Redbirds will look to improve on their 2007 record of 21-12, while finishing fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference with a record of 11-7 in conference play.

On a sunny but cloudy Friday afternoon at Adelaide Street Field, the Redbirds' season, and their mission to defend their Missouri Valley Conference championship, began. The Redbirds started their season on a winning note, beating Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne 3-1 in front of a crowd of 170.
