So Michael Vaughan retires . Not a surprise. In fact, ever since he damaged a finger in his second test and had to sit out what should have been his third, it seemed unlikely he would live on into cricketing old age. At 34, he is young. But cricket seems to have consumed him and spat him out. I think it is inevitable that he, and his brilliant opening partner Marcus Trescothick, will point the way...
