This isn't the deepest thought or most searching analysis you'll ever read (one would hope), but this Vuelta is shaping up into something significant... the first great Vuelta of the post-Puerto era. Now, granted, you have to believe that we're in the post-Puerto era, which can be difficult watching Valverde in the lead, but if that doesn't distress you, then, hey, good times. And it's been a while:...

Egoi Martinez has had admirable results in previous years at the Vuelta a España, finishing 12th overall in 2006 while racing for the Discovery Channel team followed in 2008 by a ninth place general classification for his present Euskaltel-Euskadi squad. Martinez also won a stage and collected the best climber's jersey at the 2006 Vuelta and led the Spanish Grand Tour for four days in 2008....

Most people, including myself, expected stage 19 of the Tour de France to be won by a breakaway or by an attack from one of the leading climbers, but that was not to be. The peloton caught up to the breakaway a couple of kilometers from the finish line, and the race leaders decided to wait until tomorrow's huge climb to make their final attacks. That left stage 19 to the sprinters. In a very exciting...

Next to the mountain stages of the Tour de France, I like the time trials the best. Each rider rides alone against the clock, with no help from his team. Stage 18 was the final time trial of this year's Tour, and it did not disappoint. Most people expected Alberto Contador to be good enough in this stage to keep his yellow jersey, but that wasn't good enough for him. He went out and won the stage...

Basque squad Euskaltel-Euskadi has enjoyed another solid performance at this year's Tour de France and is confident of maintaining that momentum through the race's tough final week. Egoi Martinez and Amets Txurruka have shown strong form during the hilly transitional stages of the past week, the former in 19th on the general classification, 5:37 behind race leader Alberto Contador. Txurruka, most...

Team Astana got some bad news before stage 13 started. Near the end of stage 12, American Levi Leipheimer crashed on a curve. At the time, he didn't think it was serious, and he finished the race. But this morning, he couldn't grip his handlebars and an x-ray showed he had a broken wrist. Even though he was in fourth place and a race favorite, he had to drop out of the race. There was a breakaway...

The Italians are already making their mark on the 2009 Tour de France, with Rinaldo Nocentini enjoying his seventh day in yellow after defending it over the Vosges on Friday through the rain and cold. Incredibly, Nocentini is the first Italian in yellow since the 2000 Tour, when Alberto Elli wore the maillot jaune for a few days before the Pyrénées. Franco Pellizotti is another Italian...

If Franco Pellizotti's mad dash for minor points in Thursday's six lower category climbs seemed somewhat excessive, it all paid off when he moved into the lead of mountains classification at the Tour de France in Colmar on Friday. The Liquigas rider clawed out a mere seven points on the stage 12 run to Vittel to begin Friday's stage 17 points adrift of Egoi Martínez in that competition. But...

CYCLING Lance Armstrong spins his wheels at Tour de France After another day of no change among the leaders, the seven-time champion says things should change in Friday's mountain stage. Staff and Wire Reports July 17, 2009 Lance Armstrong is ready to climb again, ready to leave the pack at the Tour de France after days of flat riding that belonged to sprinters. After three days of sitting back in...

The climbs in stage 12 of the Tour de France weren't super difficult, but there were enough of them to allow a breakaway of seven riders to survive and finish ahead of the peloton. The strongest of the seven riders in the breakaway turned out to be Danish rider Nicki Sorenson of Saxo Bank (pictured), who won the stage. Frenchman Laurent Lefevre of Bouyges Telecom finished second, and Italian Franco...

Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) - fifth on stage, 40th overall @ 10:20 "Again we were fighting it out for victory right at the 'gates' [to the finish]. Sorensen hit out at the right time, succeeded in opening a hole and he had time to enjoy the victory. Today I've seen that Pellizotti will be a tough rival for the mountains jersey. We must ride the right way and play our cards. It was a tough...
