Boys of Summer Flocking to Flanders?

One unexpected name will be on the Ronde van Vlaanderen startlist next spring: Andy Schleck. This comes from a Sporza translation but Schleck apparently wants to try his hand at some cobbled races in anticipation of the sections of Paris-Roubaix to appear in the Tour de France. The money quote, translated badly, sounds like Schleck is concerned that this stage is a place where he could lose the Tour...

No comeback for Mayo

Basque climber Iban Mayo says he won’t mount a professional comeback despite having served out his two-year racing ban for an EPO positive in 2007. Now 32, the once-feared climber called his controversial doping case a “witch hunt” and told the Bilbao daily El Correo he will not try to return to the professional ranks. “I had already decided I wasn’t going to return after...

Sports court bans Spaniard Mayo for two years

TAS Decision: Mayo Sanctioned

Cast your mind back to the 2007 Tour de France. Iban Mayo tested positive on the A sample for EPO. Then, confusion took over. The B sample disappeared or was un-testable. Someone with a better memory than I can resurrect those details. The A sample flew around the world for testing and re-testing. Paris, Lausanne, Sydney, and back to Paris. Though the sample did not get to go to Ghent - Mayo requested...

Iban looking good in Zikloturista Iban Mayo

The third running of the annual Martxa Zikloturista Iban Mayo, staged in his honour, was held at the 18th of May this year. 177 riders completed the hilly course, with Iban taking second to his close friend and ex-Orbea rider Julen Zubero. The cyclosportif was reported to have been a great success. Judging by the pictures, and by interviews, he's been spending a lot of time in the gym of late. His...

Poll results: Is Iban your all-time favourite rider?

This poll took me by surprise I have to say. Of course, it's called Iban Mayo Blog, so some of my readers have to be Iban-fans, but I had no idea 57 % of you rate Iban as your all-time favourite. I guess this just goes to prove that Iban is, truly, appreciated all over the world.

Complete Castilla y León roster

Euskaltel will field the following eight riders in the Vuelta a Castilla y León, starting tomorrow: Jon, Amets, Koldo, Andoni, Iñaki, Samu, Dioni and Markel. The race kicks off with tough-looking 9-km prologue, so watch out for, especially, Markel and Samu. Koldo and Iñaki will likely get their chance to sprint on stage 3, while stages 2 and 5 might also end up in bunch-sprints....

3rd Iban Mayo Zikloturista

Info about the third running of the Marcha Zikloturista Iban Mayo, or Iban's own cyclosportif event as we'd say in French/English, has just been released on his website. The event, held to great success the last two years, is organized by Iban's official fan club, the Iban Mayo Lagunartea, and will be held on the 18th of May this year. It's possible for most people to take part and ride alongside our...

Poll results: Iban to be cleared on Saturday?

What a stupid poll that turned out to be. As we all know, Iban was neither cleared nor suspended this last Saturday, as the CAS decided to think about the case for a little while longer. But at least we got to see that a surpisingly huge percentage of the Iban Mayo Blog readers think that Iban will indeed be cleared. 76 % voted "yes", but I'm not 76 % sure that we will ever see an end to...

The Spaniards look out for their own

While USA Cycling almost seems to relish the opportunity to throw their own riders under the proverbial doping bus, Spain continues to stand up for their biggest stars. After refusing to even consider the idea that Alejandro Valverde might not be clean as the driven snow despite alleged links to Operacion Puerto, they've now declined to pursue a doping case against Iban Mayo. While I want cycling to...

"We'll continue to support Iban"

So it says in the Spanish Cycling Federation's letter to the UCI, in which they confirmed they won't reopen Iban's case. The Federation's General Secretary, Eugenio Bermúdez, told el Diario Vasco: "We've written a letter to the UCI, dated December the 28th, to make it clear that we have no intention of reopening Iban Mayo's case, simply because a person can't be judged on the same thing...

Merry Christmas

I remember writing this same post last year as well. Last year's post read: "It`s the 23rd of December, so Christmas is all over us again. I just want to take the opportunity to wish all of you a Merry Christmas, or Feliz Navidad as some of you may say. In Norwegian it`s God Jul. Anyway... Enjoy the festive period, and check into Iban Mayo Blog for updates throughout the holidays." Well,...

CAS to rule on Iban's future

The "Caso Mayo" is now finally in CAS' hands. The UCI issued a statement on their website, titled "Analysis of Iban Mayo’s B sample: the UCI's position". It reads: "Iban Mayo tested positive for EPO on 24 July 2007 during the Tour de France after analysis of an A sample by the Châtenay-Malabry National Anti-Doping Laboratory in Paris. Following the announcement...
