He will also stand down as a member of Labour’s ruling National Executive Committee. Sir Jeremy, who turned 65 on 17th November, has been a Newcastle...

By Alex Smith / @alexsmith1982 Great stuff from Ed Balls this week, as he talked proudly of Labour's education policies and asked himself and the House whether they could answer GCSE questions. They couldn't, of course. Balls said: "Hard questions, Mr Speaker, in tough exams which our young people are doing very well in. But I have to say there's one question I do know the answer to: why are...

SANTA CLARA - Alex Smith v. Aaron Rodgers is a rivalry manufactured by the media. This according to Rodgers, who said this week he's always been friendly with Smith, even when they were vying to become the No. 1 draft pick four years ago. More than that, Rodgers said, there's a brotherhood among NFL quarterbacks, especially those from the same draft class. "I've been following (Smith) and pulling...

November 18, 2009With the 6th pick of the 2006 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers took tight end Vernon Davis, out of the University of Maryland. The Niners were confident in his ability to catch passes and become a serious threat on offense, perhaps even to the level of elite tight ends like Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates. In his first three seasons in San Francisco, Davis did not live up to those...

Goood morning everyone. Today I've got plenty of links for you, a couple previews, some audio clips, some interviews and notes and all that good stuff. I'm also going to try and keep my grammar up to par in this edition of the Nuggets considering the fact that some of you have been complaining lately! As the weekend draws closer all I can do is get more and more confident that the 49ers are going to...

ALAMEDA Tom Cable was talking quarterbacks. In using complimentary words like "pros," he was gushing about the Raiders' signal callers. "I mean, they're here all the time," Cable cooed. "They're here early. They're here late. They study. They watch film. They talk about it. They draw it up. They involve their teammates to a great degree. Just what you'd expect."...

For the first time in their careers, Alex Smith’s San Francisco 49ers will face off against Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers. These two young men have been intertwined since their inception into the league. Although they have been in the league for five seasons, they have never played against each other because of [...]

By Alex Smith / @alexsmith1982 I'm going back into my old school in the morning to work with the alumni networks project for state schoolers I'm involved with, FutureFirst . In preparing for this, and for speaking on the panel of the launch of the Young Fabian blog last night, I got to wondering why all my schoolmates are avid Facebook users, while all the people I know in politics are addicted to...

And we're back to take a look at the composite week 10 NFL power rankings. My favorite ranking has to belong to Vic Carucci of NFL.com. Vic has the 49ers ranked 22nd for the second straight week. That actually doesn't bother me. What I find amusing is the fact that for two straight weeks he's had the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 49ers. Last week he had the Seahawks 20th, this week he has them 21st....

Morning everyone. Today I've got more links for you than I did yesterday, but I'm in a huge rush after a rather bad day. The first of the previews for Sunday's game against the Packers are rolling in as well as some articles concerning the 49ers wide receivers and who will be starting. Other than that, I don't think I have a whole lot for you. As I'm in a hurry I'll just get to your links. WR Josh...

By Alex Smith / @alexsmith1982 Today's Queen's Speech will be an important opportunity for Labour to lay out what it will do for the remainder of this Parliament, and will also begin to draw further dividing lines with the Tories and signal the beginning of the long general election campaign. Expect the Speech to include: * A Financial Services Bill to further regulate banking. * Personal social care...

By James Valentine The ICM polling results in yesterday’s Guardian are a cause for concern. As Alex Smith has noted , while the raw numbers are encouraging for Labour, the indications that Cameron is “sealing the deal” are worrying. The plusses for Cameron in this poll show that his spin is working, but they’re hardly based on reality. For example, the weird perception that...

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Colts won their 16th straight regular-season game, the equivalent of an undefeated season, and Jim Caldwell became the first rookie coach since the NFL merger to open his career with seven consecutive wins thanks to Sunday's 18-14 victory over San Francisco. Peyton Manning topped 300 yards and got credit for another Colts rally, but it was Joseph Addai who won it. The...

HOUSTON – Steve Slaton scored two touchdowns and the Houston Texans built a big lead before holding on for a 24-21 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The Texans led 21-0 at halftime, then withstood a rally led by backup quarterback Alex Smith. Eugene Wilson's interception on fourth down halted the 49ers' last-gasp drive. San Francisco (3-3) benched Shaun Hill after a terrible first half, and...
