Bengals offensive line is a question about inexperience

B.J. Bethal writes in response to Dave's optimistic post review , "can anyone find the depth chart and name one quality offensive lineman on the roster ?" One must define quality . Does quality mean Pro Bowl? Or does it mean a lineman that could start with other teams? What about Andrew Whitworth ? Could Bobbie Williams be quality? Even Anthony Collins ' brief stint as the starting left tackle...

Bengals draft picks typically sign in the 11th hour

In writing notes for the Inside Slant, FoxSports.com writes that " negotiations also have not started with second-round pick Rey Maualuga ." It's pretty common that draft picks tend to sign late in the offseason -- like right before training camp starts. Last year, the Bengals officially signed five draft picks on the day players reported to camp : Jerome Simpson , Pat Sims , Andre Caldwell...

Kyle Cook and Dhani Jones fight during practice; is Cook the Rich Braham replacement?

Through the first 76 minutes into the 2006 season, Carson Palmer was sacked one time -- a seven-yard loss by Jared Allen who subsequently forced a fumble. The Bengals had a veteran center in Rich Braham through those first 76 minutes. After he suffered a career-ending leg injury early in the second quarter against the Browns , Palmer was sacked four times in the next three quarters, six times at Pittsburgh...

Bengals follow the path of the underdog; The Big Whit 77... and Santonio Holmes compared to Ochocinco?

"With the three wide receivers they have (Chad Ochocinco, Laveranues Coles and Chris Henry) and the quarterback they have, they can be as exciting as the Cardinals offensively if they get things rolling right." - Boomer Esiason on the 2009 Bengals possibly following the path of the 2008 Arizona Cardinals . Andrew Whitworth formed the Big Whit 77 Foundation, which is a: " non-profit organization...

Palmer is only Bengals player ranked in top-ten in Madden '10

ESPN released ranked players, based on positions, in a top-ten format in anticipation for EA Sports' August 14 release of Madden '10 . Let's see. Wide receivers in the top-ten? Nope. Tight Ends in the top-ten? Nope. Defense ? Nope. Running backs ? Nope. The lone top-ten Bengals player is Carson Palmer, who ranks eighth . Shutdown Corner is surprised by Palmer's ranking, drunkenly writing, "there's...

Young line has vets to lean on

While Bobbie Williams is the only player from last year's opener back in his usual position (right guard), there is some experience returning. Williams and Andrew Whitworth emerged as the leaders of the defensive line last year.

Week in Review: Offensive Line set, Carson Palmer speaks, Andre Smith plays agent musical chairs

If you were to put together a Week in Review for this week, what would your lead story be? The Bengals conducted their first Organized Team Activities in which head coach Marvin Lewis declared the team's first-team offensive line. Were you surprised that Andrew Whitworth became the team's left tackle so quickly? No competition. It was like Lewis had already envisioned the team's offensive line -- likely...

Andrew Whitworth is the Cincinnati Bengals starting left tackle

This fuzzy screen-cap is Andrew Whitworth's departure after defending himself from the eye-gorging defensive tackle, John Henderson. Is it a surprise that the Cincinnati Bengals moved Andrew Whitworth to left tackle and Andre Smith at right tackle during their first day of OTA? We battled the idea amongst ourselves, the mighty warriors of conjecture, prophesy and forecasting. How will Bengals offensive...

How will the starting lineup for the Bengals offensive line shake out?

Second-year tackle Anthony Collins could be a wild card in the offensive line musical chairs scenarios, starting at right tackle early and then left tackle later. In the spring of 2006, the Cincinnati Bengals drafted LSU offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth in the second round. While blogging the draft that year , I wrote: If this pick isn't telling enough, you haven't followed the whole Willie Anderson...

The Bengals have options with the offensive line

Would Andrew Whitworth be better suited at left tackle than any rookie tackle in the draft? This is a fair question that has some legs to it. However, Whitworth hasn't been without his struggles. While solid for most of his rookie season at left tackle for the injured Levi Jones, Whitworth was simply schooled by the speedy Dwight Freeney ; three sacks if I recall. Remember the tie against the Eagles...

Drafting advice, updating our IR starting lineup and being super-cereal about Manbearpig

Drafting linemen in the first two rounds, only way to go . I disagree with Geoff Hobson's assessment that if the Bengals decide to start Anthony Collins and/or Andrew Whitworth at tackle next season, that they'd need the experience of Bobbie Williams at guard -- if they can't adjust during off-season camps, then maybe they shouldn't be here. The question he responds to is simple, why not move Williams...

The trail of tears and bad limbs continues for the Bengals. The team on Friday placed two more players, including another starter - left guard Andrew Whitworth (ankle) - on IR. Backup lineman Scott Kooistra (knee) also went on IR.
