Since joining the Lions in 2001 as Matt Millen's second overall NFL draft selection (behind offensive tackle Jeff Backus), center Dominic Raiola has never experienced a winning season in Detroit.

Once upon a time, Jeff Backus and Jon Jansen bookended the offensive line at Michigan. It was 1997 and '98. Backus was the left tackle, Jansen the right tackle. They won a share of a national championship and went 22-3.

Say what you want about Jeff Backus. But the guy is tough and always shows up to play.

FINALLY! Jeff Backus felt 50 pounds lighter, having shed the biggest of the many albatrosses draped around his neck during his Lions career.

by JJ Cooper Filed under: Redskins , NFL Injuries If finding themselves trailing the Lions wasn't a bad enough first half for the Washington Redskins , things just got worse, as defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was carted off the field with an injury after sacking Matt Stafford. The sack came when Haynesworth beat Lions left tackle Jeff Backus to pull down Stafford for a key sack on 3rd-and-5 in...

Lions left tackle Jeff Backus looked really bad on a key play in Sunday's 27-13 loss to Minnesota, and he has taken a lot of heat for it. But it wasn't his fault. "I put that on me, actually," fullback Jerome Felton said today. On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, defensive end Jared Allen streaked in untouched and sacked quarterback Matthew Stafford, forcing...

I feel bad for Jeff Backus. I really do. Along with fellow Detroit offensive lineman Dominic Raiola, Backus has the unenviable distinction of being the main “link” that traces the Lions from a team on the brink of the playoffs in 2000 to the present day disaster. Backus was the first draft pick taken during the [...]

Disclaimer: This is my original work, sorry for the long post. http://www.studyofsports.com/?p=2413 Before I begin, I'd like to address my absence from this website. I went into what I like to call a "sports coma" after the Red Wings lost game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals. Combined with the end of the Pistons' dynasty, the embarrassment of the Michigan Wolverines football season, and,...

Two images stick out when Jeff Backus thinks of the two years he played with Jon Jansen at Michigan. The first image comes from their first game together, a 27-3 victory over Colorado in the 1997 season opener. On one play, Jansen took his opponent and bent him backward. Badly.

Right tackle Jon Jansen was released by the Redskins earlier today, and already the Lions have made their move by agreeing to a one-year deal with the former Michigan Wolverine. The deal will become official if Jansen passes a physical on Monday. Assuming that happens, Jansen would join the roster to compete with Gosder Cherilus at the right tackle position. Regardless of who wins the starting job,...
