Lions OLs Backus, Jansen back together again

Once upon a time, Jeff Backus and Jon Jansen bookended the offensive line at Michigan. It was 1997 and '98. Backus was the left tackle, Jansen the right tackle. They won a share of a national championship and went 22-3.

Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson Out (Full Inactive List Here)

Both Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford are officially out for today's game. At one point it looked like Calvin Johnson was active and ready to play, but NFL.com's inactive list was not correct. It was just updated to show that Megatron will sit, and he is not the only big-name player who will miss today's game. Matthew Stafford is also inactive today, and tomorrow Dr. James Andrews will take a look...

Redskins' offensive line playing 'musical chairs'

The Washington Redskins finally have a relatively young offensive line. Center Casey Rabach, the line's youngest starter in Week 14 of last season, will be the oldest Sunday at 32 against Kansas City. Of course, that's not because the Redskins selected a bunch of linemen in recent drafts who are ready to step in. Rather, injuries to mainstays Chris Samuels and Randy Thomas, as well as the release of...

Grading the Redskins' performance

RUN OFFENSE F The Redskins had no running game. Clinton Portis had minus-2 yards on four carries in the first half a year after slashing the Lions for 126 yards on 24 carries. Veterans Randy Thomas (out for the year) and Jon Jansen - cut and now with the Lions - are much better run blockers than kids Chad Rinehart and Stephon Heyer. Portis was better after halftime but to no end. PASS OFFENSE B Santana...

Last Words Before Redskins vs Lions Tilt: Q&A with Pride of Detroit Writer

We had a chance to get the pulse of the Lions ' fanbase with a quick Q&A with Pride of Detroit , the SB Nation site dedicated to the Lions. Thanks again to Sean Yuille, who took the time to take some of our questions. Hogs Haven: What impact, if any, has Jon Jansen had on the roster? POD: Honestly, it doesn't seem like he's had a very big one. He is a backup to Gosder Cherilus , and I'm sure his...

Lions' Jansen charged up to face former team

When the Lions host the Redskins on Sunday, Jon Jansen probably will play only on the field-goal and extra-point units. Yet a Washington TV crew came to Detroit to do a piece on him this week. A Washington newspaper wrote a story about him, too. And he is pumped to play any role he can against his former team.

The Turmoil Caused By Jon Jansen Being On The Lions

So the folks over at Hogs Haven asked the question that's on everyone's mind: "Can the Lions beat the Redskins with Jon Jansen's O-Line insight?" Jansen was with the Redskins for nine years, including one -- last year -- under the current coaching staff. It certainly seems conceivable that Jansen might be able to impart some kind of information -- about tendencies, about line calls, about...

Can the Lions Beat the Redskins With Jon Jansen's O-Line Insight?

"Ooo. I got one. What's 141 years old, costs $50 million dollars, and gets pushed over by the wind? ... The Redskins O-line!! hahaha" View full size photo uploaded September 23, 2009 Teams picking up players to get an edge on opponent's strategy is nothing new. This week, the Redskins face a similar challenge in that disgruntled former Redskin, Jon Jansen , signed with the Lions this off-season....

Jansen is a Lion in winter

Nothing about Jon Jansen's situation changed from Week 3 of last season to Week 3 of this season. But then again, everything has changed. A year ago, Jansen was recovering from the shock of losing his job as the Washington Redskins' starting right tackle, a job he held, when healthy, for nine seasons. Jansen, once the bedrock of the offensive line, suddenly was reduced to playing on field goals and...

Redskins like revamped offensive line

Playing with the lead last December, the New York Giants' defense wasn't doing anything fancy. The elaborate blitzes that flummoxed the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl were replaced by a simple four-man rush. And the Washington Redskins' banged-up offensive line couldn't block it. A sequence of eight second-half drop-backs by quarterback Jason Campbell told a bleak story. Scramble, sack, 8-yard...
