LIONS AT SEAHAWKS: Lions' run offense vs. Seahawks' run defense

Seattle can be one of the most difficult places to play in the NFL. The 12th man can be loud and intimidating, and the Seahawks love to use it to their advantage. They stack the line and attack. The Lions could come out today the way they did last week against St. Louis -- run, run, run -- trying to quiet the crowd and control the game. They need consistency and explosiveness. Their longest run by...

Morris unlikely to start

Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said he was "optimistic" that RB Kevin Smith would play in Sunday's game at Seattle after he suffered a shoulder injury last week vs. the Rams, according to the Detroit News . Smith sat out practice on Wednesday but did work on Thursday and Friday. He's expected to start and lose a handful of carries to backup Maurice Morris .

Friday Notes: Kevin Smith Returns to Practice

Kevin Smith returned to practice on Thursday, splitting No. 1 reps with Maurice Morris . Calvin Johnson also practiced again on Thursday. It appears both will be game-time decisions for Sunday's game, but if I had to make a prediction right now, I'd say that the Lions will have all of their offensive weapons against Seattle. A lawsuit against Dennis Northcutt that brought about some pretty serious...

RB Kevin Smith Misses Practice

Running back Kevin Smith (shoulder) did not practice on Wednesday, Mlive.com reports. Smith is the teams leading rusher with 393 yards on the ground with three touchdowns. Next on the list is Maurice Morris, who has just 106 yards, so losing Smith vs the Seahakws would be a big blow.

Calvin Johnson practices, Kevin Smith does not, but he is still starting

This time last week, the good news for the Detroit Lions was that quarterback Matt Stafford was practicing, but wide receiver Calvin Johnson was limited. This week, Johnson is finally practicing with the first team, but that optimism is slightly tempered by the news that running back Kevin Smith didn't practice on Wednesday. But at least when Smith is healthy enough to play, he will be the team's starting...

Smith still Lions' top RB

The Detroit Free-Press reports that Lions RB Kevin Smith remains the team's featured back, according to head coach Jim Schwartz. Smith and backup Maurice Morris split carries last week against the Rams because Smith left the game with a shoulder injury that doesn't appear to be serious (Schwartz didn't address it). Smith has disappointed a little bit as he's amassed 393 yards on 125 carries (3.1 avg.)...

Lions coach says Kevin Smith still primary ballcarrier

Even though the Lions ran the ball well by giving Kevin Smith and Maurice Morris nearly equal carries Sunday against St. Louis, coach Jim Schwartz said the workload split was the result of a shoulder injury to Smith during the game, and Smith remains the feature back.

Week 9: Super Sleepers

While we're not projecting starting type stats for these players, they have good potential and could surprise. This week's picks include Jerome Harrison, Ryan Moats, Maurice Morris, Keenan Burton, and Malcom Floyd. [ Go To Page ]

Lions to become latest team to use two-back system?

Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith has been struggling with injuries, is averaging just 3.1 yards per carry and hasn't scored since week four. All of that might mean a timeshare in Detroit's backfield. Smith left Sunday's game against St. Louis with a shoulder injury. Head coach Jim Schwartz said after the game that Smith probably could have returned, but the Lions decided to stick with Maurice...

K. Smith still Lions' workhorse

Because of Kevin Smith 's shoulder problems, he and Maurice Morris split time in the backfield against the Rams in Week 8, but coach Jim Schwartz said that isn't the plan going forward. "Kevin is our workhorse running back, and he's going to get most of the carries," he said. "We've always wanted to get Maurice some work. That's the case everywhere. As great as Adrian Peterson is, Chester...
