According to a report in The Sports Xchange , Seattle kicker Olindo Mare is in the final year of a two-year contract and would like an extension. Mare performed well last season with 102 points and made 24-of-27 field goals. However, the Seahawks have kept around last year's sixth-round draft choice Brandon Coutu , and the two will once again compete for the starting kicking job in 2009.

Overview: Seattle signed Olindo Mare on March 27, 2008 to a two year, $3.5 million contract. It was the single best move of Seattle's offseason. It was met with scorn and derision. Ruskell hedged his bets by drafting kicker Brandon Coutu in the seventh round of the 2008 draft. Mare beat out Coutu and went on to be, discounting position, the single best player on the Seahawks roster. What went right:...

The Seahawks' plan after losing kicker Josh Brown was to add a veteran and a rookie, and let them kick it out in training camp. Instead, Olindo Mare and Brandon Coutu were on the roster for the entire season, and still are.

Wow, Olindo Mare. We're saved. A guy who got run out of Miami and New Orleans because he sucks. Let's hear from the Ruskell knee-pad crowd how great a move this was...what an upgrade over Josh Brown.- nighthawk2 There's a laundry list here, but I found this one particularly amusing. I mean, us Ruskell lovers don't need no knee-pads, we hurt for our man. nighthawk2 might articulate his mistake more...

The Rams for once had something they so rarely had this season…a lead late in the game. And in Week 15, they let it slip through their fingers. The Seahawks won on a short field goal as time expired from Olindo Mare. The offense could not control the clock in the fourth quarter (only running 6 [...]

If it's possible for the Seahawks to have a midseason MVP, it would be Olindo Mare.

Olindo Mare has officially won the starting kicking job in week one . This is good news and hopefully an indication that Seattle properly values kickoff distance. So why then is Brandon Coutu still on the official 53? Does Seattle really think the market for kickers will be weaker after week 1? I, for one, won't be confident this competition is over until only one kicker remains on Seattle's roster....
