Writing is easier when you don't have to think up an intro. In terms of things we know we can measure pretty well, Rob Johnson the defender doesn't stand out, at least not in a good way. His error rate, for whatever that's worth, is about average. His four in 754.1 innings matches up well with the league-average rate of 6.1 per 1000. His arm is decent. He's thrown out 20 of 71 would-be base-stealers...

A politician with great persuasive power can use it in two ways. It can be used to cultivate the energy of the general interest, or it can be used to try and mollify the people while facilitating the elites' agenda.

A couple thoughts when watching Adrian Peterson and Aaron Rodgers. 1) AP -- he finds and hits the hole about once every 6 times he carries the ball. He either has no instincts or no vision. It is amazing that he is able to rush for around 100 yards in a game give the fact that out of 10 carries, 4 are blocked so poorly nothing is there and the other six times he takes the best route to gain yardage...

Elizabeth Warren sums things up pretty succinctly: The banking lobby is as powerful and deeply entrenched as ever, but it was powerful in the 1930s, too. Nonetheless, the New Dealers learned the Great Lesson: Powerful insiders cannot be permitted to write the rules, and prosperity and security depend on a playing field that supports a vibrant middle class. Today, we face a similar set of questions...

The Return of the Great Depression It can quite reasonably be said that at no point in economic history has technical knowledge ever been less relevant to being a good economist than today. Mainstream economics is in complete disarray. In the UK, economists are reeling in shock as their predicted third-quarter recovery has failed to appear, while in the USA, Nobel-winning Keynesians are first calculating...

Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, and Rob Johnson, former chief economist, US Senate Banking Committee, discuss bailouts made to “too big to fail” companies. How can you take that in and not be completely amazed at the audacious piracy of firms like Goldman-Sachs (a “great vampire squid” as Matt Taibbi [...]

The question most asked here is "how long can this go on? Bailouts for the ones who created the mess, bankers acting like they earned it, and Congress pretending to reform the system.

* much From Kirby Arnold this afternoon , we get this bit about Johjima through Mark Lowe : "I talked to [Kenji] last year about it during batting practice one day," Lowe said. "We were in the outfield at Shea. He told me, 'I don't care how much money I'm making. I don't play for the money. I want to play every day.' Meanwhile, Rob Johnson has one surgery down and one to go, according to MLB.com's Jim Street. I put in a call to Rob Johnson on Monday to get his reaction on the Kenji Johjima news, seeing as how he's now the senior catcher in the organization with his one year and 57 days of service time. Johnson had been traveling from Vail, Colo., where he had hip surgery last Friday, to Montana on Monday, so he wasn't able to return my call until today. He and his wife and infant child will be leaving shortly...

You know how testy we get when people make comments about how awesome our could be in years? Remember the Nageotte/Blackley/Meche/Anderson rotations, Clement/Johjima/Johnson/Moore catching caches and Ichiro/Gutierrez/Saunders/Ackley outfields? We do our best to try and keep people grounded on these types of issues because, as it turns out, the future is incredibly hard to predict and a hell of a lot...
