Cedric Benson wins FedEx Ground Player of the Week; comparing his season to Rudi Johnson's franchise-setting season in 2005

One could argue that Cedric Benson won the FedEx Ground Player of the Week award because he did it against a team that hadn't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 39 straight games. With 27 carries, Cedric Benson recorded 120 yards rushing and a 28-yard touchdown. The touchdown, in the closing minutes of the third quarter, gave the Bengals a 10-7 lead over a heavily favored opponent. In Baltimore, no less....

Malzahn says Smith is versatile

By Luke Brietzke, For the TimesDaily AUBURN - During Eric Smith's true freshman preseason last year, his powerful running style drew comparisons to former AU tailback Rudi Johnson. Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn came in and had different ideas for Smith. Four games into the 2009 season, Smith looks more like Little Carl Stewart - the former Auburn jack-of-all-trades...

Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1) @ Cincinnati Bengals (1-1): Q&A With Cincy Jungle

Many thanks to Josh over at Cincy Jungle for taking the time to answer a few questions about this Sunday's big AFC North matchup between the Steelers and the Bengals. Head on over to their fine blog for more information about the game, as well as to check out my answers to his questions at some point later this evening. - Michael B. - ************** 1) I've written on numerous occasions that I thought...

QT3 Madden Online Franchise: Week 4

I was losing. I was going to lose the game. I had no offense for the first half. I got some lucky throws in, lucky catches and managed to pull out a win. First off, the Ravens have a TOUGH defense. I like throwing crossing patterns over the middle but with Ed Reed at safety, I don't dare throw it anywhere near him. I couldn't run. I couldn't pass. Every drive in the 1st and 2nd quarter was pretty 3...

QT3 Madden Online Franchise: Week 3

Tough match against Falcons this week. I threw 3 interceptions, one that was returned for a touchdown. Ouch. It is tempting to just go 5 wide and throw with Brady and Moss, but interceptions are the devil and will lose the game for you. I picked up Rudi Johnson off waivers; he's slow but he has a high trucking and I just need a RB to pound the run in. I didn't have much of a run game this time, but...

Strength in numbers; an examination of who the Bengals started the regular season since 2006

When the preseason marches towards a welcomed conclusion, discussion and debate takes place on who the team cuts and keeps. Sometimes the topic goes into salary cap causalities; veterans that are cut, like Willie Anderson and Rudi Johnson last year. Other times, the debate talks about players that surprisingly make the roster. As jsl413 broke down, the Bengals depth is strong in some areas , weak in...

Buying a Bengals Jersey Sucks

Click for larger image This little discovery is... Well, it's disappointing is what it is. I was perusing around the NFL's online pro shop , seeing if -- God forbid -- the had any of these monstrosities for the Cincinnati Bengals . Fortunately, that answer is no, but that's about the only good news I saw while I was looking at the Bengals apparel inventory -- especially when I started looking at the...

Offensive Lines in the AFC North

With most people agreeing that the Bengals 2009 season will be decided by the success of the Offensive line, James Walker from ESPN's AFC North Blog asks his readers to decide which line in the AFC North is worse, Steelers or Bengals. There are too many reasons for me to say the Bengals have the better line. For one I am a Bengals, and I'm drunk from the offseason Kool-aid, and somebody made it a double...

Willie Anderson comments on Andre Smith negotiations; Bengals need a Ring of Fame to honor Bengals greats

If there's a single player that I miss the most that used to play for the Cincinnati Bengals , it's Willie Anderson . He was perhaps the most underrated offensive tackle in the NFL until late in his Bengals career. A Three-time First Team All-Pro, a Four-time Pro Bowler and a leader in the clubhouse, Anderson was the only guy that would say shut up, and Chad Ochocinco Johnson shut up. When he joined...

Bengals Training Camp: Projecting three veteran players that miss the cut

Each year, we examine the team's roster heading into training camp and predict which veteran players will miss the cut. Much of the reasoning is cost -- aka, salary cap casualties. Levi Jones would have been a perfect example -- but he was released several months ago. Other times the issue is simply age, allowing the team to turnover into youth. This year's list isn't so much cost, as it is availability,...

The Bengals Offensive Line Could Be Its Achilles Heal

The biggest thing that makes an offense go is the offensive line. Every expert will tell you that if an offensive line can't protect the passer or open holes for the running back, the offense will struggle. The Bengals have what is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league with Carson Palmer . When given time to throw, he is the biggest reason the offense has been feared recently. OK, until...

Remember Last Year Volume 4

James Walker, writer for the AFC North blog on ESPN.com, put together his 4th list of comments that people had to say about the division during this time last summer. It is always quite intriguing to see how big of fools some people make themselves. Notice how very few, if any, sound like hey came from Ravens fans. Comments dealing with the Ravens in Bold. "Big, big year with Ben Utecht . He gives...
