November 18, 2009With the 6th pick of the 2006 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers took tight end Vernon Davis, out of the University of Maryland. The Niners were confident in his ability to catch passes and become a serious threat on offense, perhaps even to the level of elite tight ends like Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates. In his first three seasons in San Francisco, Davis did not live up to those...

The 49ers were an up-and-coming bunch just a few weeks ago. They won five of their last seven games last year with new coach Mike Singletary at the helm, giving them some momentum heading into the offseason. Then they started the season with two wins, both against NFC West rivals. Word out of Candlestick was that Singletary hadn't taken off his pants once! Not once! But now, San Fran is ... down-and-going?...

Mooorning, folks. I'm writing this a couple hours early as I have to get plenty of sleep for the game today. I'll be showing up quite a few hours early, as usual, just long enough to actually begin thinking positively for this game. Don't get me wrong, I haven't given up on this team and I don't think I ever will, but I just don't feel so good about this season anymore. Still, as always, I should be...

Bee Sports Editor/Opinion 49ers' future QB is playing on Saturdays The view from section LR19, Row 3 at Candlestick Park on Sunday did nothing to dissuade me from my prior thoughts on the 49ers' quarterback situation. The answer is in next April's NFL draft. That is obvious after watching Alex Smith from the end zone behind him. He zeroed in early on receivers. He didn't check off enough to his secondary...

QUARTERBACKS The assignment: Shaun Hill was supposed to manage an offense driven by a powerful running game. When that running game failed, Hill was replaced by Alex Smith, who coaches believe can better open up the offense in the absence of a strong ground game. Progress report: Smith has shown flashes of being the quarterback everyone expected him to become. But Sunday's loss to Tennessee also showed...

San Francisco QB Alex Smith threw two interceptions in the final 6:24 and three in all on Sunday in a Week 9 loss to the Titans. He also fumbled twice and was sacked four times -- not the kind of day he'd hoped for in his first home start in more than two years. Smith took over the starting job at halftime against Houston on Oct. 25 when coach Mike Singletary benched Shaun Hill . He finished with 286...

SANTA CLARA Jimmy Raye has been taking plenty of heat during the 49ers' recent three-game slide, but the veteran offensive coordinator had a loyal defender watching from the sideline during Friday's practice. Rich Gannon, who will provide color commentary Sunday for CBS, spent four seasons with Raye in Kansas City and then one more season with the Raiders. Raye was the Chiefs' offensive coordinator...
