The San Francisco 49ers dropped a critical home contest to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, moving them two games out of first place in the NFC West. The Niners also saw two of their most important offensive players end the game with injuries. Running back Frank Gore got poked in the right eye during the game and has a right eye contusion. Tight end Vernon Davis also appeared on the post-game injury...
More photos » by Charles Rex Arbogast - AP Browse more photos » Today in his Monday Morning QB-Tuesday edition, Peter King of Sports Illustrated took an email question from Joseph of Chicago that started out like this: If you're the Chicago Bears ' management, who are you more inclined to fire, Lovie Smith or Ron Turner ? He goes on to get more in detail with his question, bashing both...
49ers QB Alex Smith has been an improvement for the offense since taking over two and a half games ago, cashing in six touchdowns vs. five interceptions, albeit leading the team to no wins vs. the Texans, Colts and Titans. He'll get the Bears on Thursday as part of Week 10 and will take on a pass defense that allowed five passing scores last week to the Cardinals and 16 on the season. Additionally,...
Save the Texans and the Giants, every team in the NFL has reached the midpoint of their schedule, so now seems an acceptable to time to look back on the first half of the 2009 NFL season and dole out a few meaningless awards. Let's go! MVP - (tie) Peyton Manning/Drew Brees Flip a coin. Maybe one team falls off some in the second half of the year, and then you can give it to the other guy. At this point,...
Frank Gore #21 of the San Francisco 49ers celebrates after scoring a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans during an NFL game on November 8, 2009 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California. Parys Haralson #98, Manny Lawson #99 and Isaac Sopoaga #90 of the San Francisco 49ers wait to be introduced in NFL action against the Tennessee Titans on November 8, 2009 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco,...
QUARTERBACKS The assignment: Shaun Hill was supposed to manage an offense driven by a powerful running game. When that running game failed, Hill was replaced by Alex Smith, who coaches believe can better open up the offense in the absence of a strong ground game. Progress report: Smith has shown flashes of being the quarterback everyone expected him to become. But Sunday's loss to Tennessee also showed...
The 49ers did not practice Monday, but they listed TE Vernon Davis as limited with a shoulder injury heading into Thursday's game against Chicago. Davis will be listed as questionable, but he is expected to play. Davis had 10 catches for 102 yards in Sunday's game against the Titans.
Yesterday's 34-27 loss to the Titans (the f'ing Titans, for crying out loud!!!) was just plain ugly. U-G-L-Y. After playing quite well for 3 quarters, resulting in a 20-17 lead, a meltdown of Biblical magnitude resulted in a 34-20 deficit. A late garbage touchdown made the score respectable, but a loss is still a loss. The prime architect of the meltdown was Alex Smith. He played quite well for 3 quarters....

After another brutal loss, the 49ers have a short week to turn around and get ready for the also struggling Chicago Bears . On the one hand that's a bad thing because the 49ers are rather banged up coming off the loss to Tennessee. On the other hand, one would like to hope a short week will allow them to quickly forget yesterday's ugliness. In the end what do I know though, right? It's not too difficult...
San Francisco TE Vernon Davis was able to surpass the century mark in receiving for the first time this season on Sunday in a Week 9 loss to the Titans. He made 10 receptions in the game, racking up 102 yards. His longest reception of the day went for 40 yards. However, he failed to make it three straight games with a TD reception.
Vernon Davis' season of excellence continues apace. Although he did not have a touchdown catch Sunday for the first time in three games, the tight end did achieve career highs in receptions and yards. Davis latched onto 10 of Alex Smith's passes for 102 yards...
As many folks around these parts know, I try to look at the bright side of things. As I've said before, if the ship is sinking and I'm going down, might as well try and not be too miserable about it. Things aren't looking pretty for the 49ers right now, but there were some definitely positives in today's game. The 49ers passed along a press release of news and notes that I thought were worth sharing....
by Wade Payne - AP View full size photo » Run the ball. We have to see if Chris Johnson can get anything against this great 49ers defense that allows only 85 yards per game on the ground. If anyone can do it, the leading rusher in the NFL can. Running the ball will also keep the pressure off Vince Young in his second start in two years. The Titans will be much better off relying on Chris Johnson...
HOUSTON – Steve Slaton scored two touchdowns and the Houston Texans built a big lead before holding on for a 24-21 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The Texans led 21-0 at halftime, then withstood a rally led by backup quarterback Alex Smith. Eugene Wilson's interception on fourth down halted the 49ers' last-gasp drive. San Francisco (3-3) benched Shaun Hill after a terrible first half, and...
