49ers notes: Davis in middle of the action, as usual

BRYAN PATRICK bpatrick@sacbee.com 49ers cornerback Walt Harris, right, moves in front of Rams receiver Donnie Avery for one of San Francisco's two second-quarter interceptions. Nate Clements had the other. SAN FRANCISCO – Vernon Davis caught his second touchdown pass in as many games Sunday, and this time he wasn't hit with an illegal-celebration penalty. But that doesn't mean the 49ers' hot-headed...

49ers' interceptions no longer thing of the past

49ers-Rams: Would it really be smart to have Walt Harris cover Donnie Avery?

As bad as the St. Louis Rams have been so far, one bright spot has been the play of rookie wide receiver Donnie Avery. Avery has has 25 receptions for 392 yards and two touchdowns. While Torry Holt has more receptions, Avery's YPC of 15.7 shows he's developing into a big play threat for the Rams. Given the secondary concerns in San Francisco, one has to wonder how the 49ers will play Avery. Maiocco...

Cassel intercepted again

Cassel, in a play nearly identical to the Moss touchdown, was intercepted by Nate Clements. It seems, at least in a gut reaction, that the ball is being forced down field, as Moss was clearly covered by Clements and Walt Harris (I think). The Niners now take over at their own 6 yard line.

What $9 million could buy

Detroit recreation centers have been closed and city workers have seen benefit and job cuts. The city has begun charging residents $300 a year for trash pickup to raise money. The $9 million paid to former cops Gary Brown, Harold Nelthrope and Walt Harris and for legal costs to settle their lawsuits may seem small in the context of the city's $1.5-billion general fund budget, but it's still enough...
