JIM JOHNSON yesterday called Darren Howard's Opening Day effort his best game in 33 outings as an Eagle. Howard was reluctant to embrace that assessment; it's a commentary on how disappointing his play has been since he signed that 6-year, $30 million contract to play here in 2006. Also, Howard's role has changed - he arrived as a starting defensive end, now he's a sub who takes reps at end and tackle....

After Darren Howard and Mike Patterson met in the St. Louis Rams' backfield to make a sandwich out of quarterback Marc Bulger on the Eagles' first defensive series, Howard leaped off the ground and patted his heart, a gesture he learned by watching Fred Sanford on Sanford and Son reruns.

With designs on forming a tandem of formidable pass-rushing defensive ends, the Eagles went on the free agent market and reached deep into their pockets to sign Jevon Kearse in 2004 and Darren Howard in 2006. Those two are now part-time players.

THERE ARE plenty of things to criticize the Eagles for right now without making stuff up. Want to rip them for blowing all that free-agent money on underachievers Jevon Kearse and Darren Howard? Be my guest.

Trent Cole has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. He leads the NFL with nine sacks, which is 5.5 more sacks than Jevon Kearse and Darren Howard combined. (Howard has zero sacks.) Cole’s cost to the Eagles this season is several times less than those free-agent acquisitions. It looks more likely that Brian Dawkins [...]
