They were at Qualcomm Stadium. They wore their home blues. There were thousands of fans in the stands, perpetually chanting the initials of LaDainian Tomlinson, who was virtually untouchable with the ball in his hands.

Michael Turner showed how valuable a backup running back can be – even when the starter never misses a game. Unless you think it is entirely coincidence that LaDainian Tomlinson led the league in rushing the past two seasons. That takes nothing away from Tomlinson.

Those ubiquitous Campbell's Chunky Soup commercials and print ads will be a one-man show this season. LaDainian Tomlinson, alone among NFL stars, is pitching soup. Nike will shortly introduce another shoe bearing LT's name. He shot a new commercial for the athletic apparel titan just days before reporting to camp.

I can't say I know LaDainian Tomlinson very well. We've spoken eight or 10 times over the years, and I've always found him forthcoming, passionate about being good, and as honest as an athlete can be in this media age. I always like players who so badly want to be good. Tomlinson's one of those players.
