This is the Aubrey Huff that Baltimore ex-decision-maker Mike Flanagan thought he signed. Huff is crushing everything he sees. Last week he had two-homer game against Kansas City, giving him 17 for 2008, surpassing last year’s total. I say go ‘head, Aubrey. Keep hittin’ em. Suddenly, a guy who looked like a cement block around the [...]

As the cost of oil continues to soar, some industry observers are asking whether higher energy and transport costs will persuade retailer buyers to source more garments in developed markets closer to home. Mike Flanagan doubts whether globalisation is reversible, but believes the dynamics of apparel sourcing are set to change.

From the credit crunch in the West, to rising raw material and fuel costs, and even strikes caused by the soaring price of food, the apparel industry is being ravaged by a series of catastrophes beyond its control. A huge number of Chinese businesses are worried about the US retail downturn – even though the country accounts for less than a fifth of China’s apparel sales. One reason is that their businesses were set up to exploit the US’ relatively large orders, believes Mike Flanagan, and that learning to adapt to non-US markets is one of the biggest challenges facing Chinese suppliers today.

Something’s been on my mind since spring training. It appears to be a pretty touchy subject in Baltimore. So touchy that the Baltimore Sun doesn't look like it wants to come near it. But I’m going to drop the stinkbomb and ask: What the hell is Mike Flanagan doing? He still has a badass title - executive [...]

Intrigued by a book recommended by Mike Flanagan in his latest analysis for just-style, I’ve just Googled it for a closer look. Mike describes ‘Fugitive Denim: A Moving Story of People and Pants in the Borderless World of Global Trade’ by Rachel Louise Snyder as an account of just how complex, and so often benign, an effect our industry has had on the life prospects of the world's poor. Another review...

Couple more odds and ends this evening... Orioles executive VP Mike Flanagan admitted he wouldn't have signed Miguel Tejada to a six-year deal if he knew the shortstop's proper age. But he still would've signed him (if possible). People are debating whether ESPN ambushed Tejada with his birth certificate...of course they did. Ken Rosenthal believes the optimal course of action for the Phillies is to...

Who would have thought that the chaotic and controversial relay of the Olympic torch last week through the streets of London, Paris and San Francisco could have an unexpected backlash for the apparel industry? In an article posted on just-style yesterday, Mike Flanagan argues that retailers would be wise to heed the fury of pro-Tibet activists who took the opportunity to disrupt the torch’s procession...
