Lady Bird Johnson remembered the evident distress in her husband's voice on December 7, 1941 when he told her: "The Japanese have sunk our fleet at Pearl Harbor." Twelve year old Arnold Palmer was caddying a round of golf when he heard the news; actors James Cagney and Spencer Tracy were sitting in a car outside Tracy's home in Newport Beach. This information was compiled by a WWII veteran...

I'll get this over with first: Tiger Woods means nothing to me, never has. He's just a golfer. The one thing I find disappointing, which I heard on ESPN Radio yesterday, is that it has been well-known for years that he has the raunchiest mouth on the pro tour. So he's racked up a $600 million net worth, and doesn't understand how lucky he is. He must somewhere deep inside feel he deserves it. Oh well....

Over the years there have been many 'slips of the tongue' made by sports commentators, here are just a few of them: 1. Ted Walsh - Horse Racing Commentator - 'This is really a lovely horse. I once rode her mother.' 2. New Zealand Rugby Commentator - 'Andrew Mehrtens loves it when Daryl Gibson comes inside of him.' 3. Pat Glenn, weightlifting commentator - 'And this is Gregoriava from Bulgaria . I saw...

There’s no secret about the fact that I’ve never liked golf. Certainly those spiky shoes with the strangely arousing tassels are very nice, and I won’t deny I happen to have quite a collection which I very much enjoy wearing (particularly when visiting people with shag-pile carpets), but the game’s fundamental premise of publically placing things in little holes while in the...

The professional athletes, bold-faced celebrities and corporate moguls who live in Tiger Woods' neighbourhood favour it less for its clay tennis courts and Arnold Palmer-designed golf course than for its 2.5-metre security wall and platoon of private guards.

Ken Morton Sr. was 11 and wearing his Cub Scout uniform in 1951 when he arrived at Del Paso Country Club seeking work as a caddie. He was hired. A career in golf was born, as it was for many back in that era. "Today, they would put somebody at Del Paso in jail for that," said Morton, 69, the director of golf at Haggin Oaks. Sacramento had three courses at the time. Haggin Oaks and Land Park...

The more hypocritical sports commentators have explained their prurient interest in Tiger Woods' automobile accident by saying they wonder how all the sordid speculation surrounding his violent encounter with a fire hydrant will affect Woods' business empire. That is, will it cost Woods endorsement money if it turns out he was fooling around and his wife tried to smack him one? Journalistically speaking,...

Had he won the Open at the age of 59, it would have been one of sport's all-time great stories. But the career of the golfer from Kansas has been remarkable from the start Tom Watson, whose admiration for all things Scottish is well known, is in a tricky spot – pondering a question about an incident at a 1983 golf tournament during which, in essence, he accused Gary Player of cheating –...

ANOTHER SEASON DONE GONE... ... but there's always next year, right? - When I became aware that the New York Yankees would be one of the teams in the '09 World Series, I thought they'd probably win it. No, I'm not a Yankees fan, but that doesn't matter; I like watching good baseball no matter who's playing it. So, they won the World Series this year, and Alex Rodriguez redeemed himself; he had a slew...
