Without Tiger, a summer lost

Vijay Singh wins last week's PGA Tournament at The Barclays in a playoff with Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland ... yawn. I was looking down the top-10 finishes at the Barclays -- Matt Goggin, Martin Laird, Kevin Streelman -- not exactly media standouts. Where are Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk, all world-class players? read more

Golf World: Improving aim, tempo helps putting

Last week, I was sadly watching Ernie Els play in the PGA Tour event at Firestone Country Club. I say sadly because he was hitting the ball 8 to 10 feet from the hole every time and then missing the putt. I am sure you have occasionally experienced similar problems and said to yourself: "What in the world do I have to do to get the ball in the hole?" read more

Els finds himself in a major quandary

Eleven years ago, he raised the sparkling, silver U.S. Open trophy for the second time. Ernie Els was only 27 then, and behind his sheepish smile that day he seemed a player for the ages - broad-shouldered with a gorgeously rhythmic swing and unflappable...

This Week in Golf - August 7th through August 10th

Last year, Woods closed with a one-under 69 at Southern Hills to fend off Woody Austin and Ernie Els. For Woods, it was his fourth PGA Championship title as he has gone back-to-back twice at this event.

Where the heck is Ernie Els?

As we continue to wait for the return of Tiger Woods , why don’t we take a moment to consider one of the few guys many thought could challenge him, Ernie Els . Els won the Honda Classic at the beginning of March and there were many who thought he was on the comeback trail after injuries forced his game to suffer. But ever since – not much. It appears putting is Really Hard for the Big Easy. At Firestone,...

CARLOS MONARREZ: Look! Lefty's here already!

It's beginning to look a lot like a major championship around here. Phil Mickelson showed up for practice at Oakland Hills Country Club on Tuesday. So did Australian buddies Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy. Ernie Els stopped by a little later with some takeout from Burger King. (Got to love those finely tuned athletes.)

Alternate Shot: Many of golf's elite showed little game

Many thought a pretournament favorite like Ernie Els or Sergio Garcia would be clutching the Claret Jug on Sunday evening at Royal Birkdale. But that scenario never materialized. Bob Harig and Jason Sobel delve into this topic in their weekly e-mail chat.

Golf Survives, though the Wannabees are still Wannabees

Tiger might as well have been here. For all the great golf that was – or more correctly, was not – played, the most fearsome force in the game might as well have been battling the elements at Royal Birkdale like everyone else. Ernie Els? An 80 on day one essentially knocked him out of contention. Sergio Garcia? The [...]
