I like this new FedEx Cup volatility . We're already down to 136 players and it's only Monday. Tim Rosaforte reports that playoff fever got the best of Lee Westwood , who listed "holiday" as his reasing for pulling out. And to show just how much the playoffs meant to him, Bob Estes ... who finished 124th in the final FedEx Cup standings, scheduled his wedding for this week and is not on the tee sheet....

Paul Mahoney reports on Lee Westwood's scathing post round criticism of the Oakland Hills course setup. On site sources say the rough had been trimmed but it also seems the raking we spotted last week was taken to a new extreme. At least according to Westwood. "The course is 7,500 yards long, the greens are firm, and the pins are tucked away," Westwood said of Oakland Hills (official yardage: 7,395)....

If Europe is ever to redress one of the game's more baffling anomalies and so win its first USPGA Championship since 1930, surely this will be the week at Oakland Hills. Not only is Tiger Woods absent but some powerful memories are present and as Lee Westwood said yesterday: "This is a game of confidence and we should all buoyed by what we did here in 2004."

Lee Westwood has attributed his recent success to a new-found consistency on the course and a late conversion to strength and conditioning. Westwood went into last night's final round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational here in a share of the lead with Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh, the latter his playing partner in the final pairing of the day at Firestone Country Club.
