There is also excellent jumps racing on view at Ascot, where the two Grade Two events are both over 2 miles 3 furlongs. The Ascot Hurdle at 15.35 has attracted a strong field. Lough Derg (David Pipe/ Richard Johnson) is an admirably tough campaigner, but faces a stiff task in giving weight to such as the unbeaten Zaynar (Nicky Henderson/ Andrew Tinkler) and Alan King´s pair Katchit (Robert Thornton)...

Some quite good jumps racing today, particularly at Ascot and Exeter. At the former track we expect Barney Curley´s Zabeel Palace (Paul Moloney) to get bak on the winning trail in the handicap hurdle at 16.50 CET. After 3 easy wins, he was far from disgraced when runner-up last time to Harry Trucker, who ran an excellent race at Cheltenham last weekend. German-bred Oldrik (Philip Hobbs/ Richard...

Thursday 19 November Well into the afternoon and it was shaping up to be another losing day - indeed I was struggled to get any of horses to get round. Things changed though with the Hereford 2.50, where Fortification was a selection for two of the Punter Profits systems. The horse took the lead around halfway and under forceful ride from his amateur rider stayed on strongly to win by three lengths...

Alan King and his stable jockey Choc Thornton have had a relatively quiet season so far, but that could change at Plumpton today, where they have fancied runners in several races. The Betchworth Kid, third in the Goodwood Cup, is one the most interesting new recruits to N.H. racing, and if he can jump should certainly win the novice hurdle at 14.50 CET. It is a simi.lar situation half an hour later...

The Paddy Power Gold Cup, a valuable handicap chase over 2 miles 4 1/2 furlongs at 15.35 CET, is the main event at Cheltenham today, and with 18 runners, looks very difficult indeed. After rain yesterday, more last night and more expected today, the ground will be soft, which will not suit some of the more fancied runners. One who will appreciate the going is Ballyfitz /Paddy Brennan) from Nigel Twiston-Davies´...

With the Irish meeting at Clonmel abandoned, jumping fans today have to make do with two modest cards at Ludlow and Taunton. The introductory hurdle at 15.30 CET at Ludlow looks the most interesting event and it is possible that some of these runners will be seen later in much better races, for example Paul Nicholls´ Al Amaan (Christian Williams). The beginners chase at 16.00 has some useful hurdlers...

In a poem of 1620, Richard Johnson attributes the Honi soit qui mal y pense motto to the queen of France, in his “Gallant Song of the Garter of England.” When her garter falls during a feast, the snickering courtiers seem to accuse her of dropping it deliberately to attract the king’s attention, so it is actually the queen who coins the motto in their reproof:
