What's up

Well, the KLM Open is going on over in Europe. Some great players are competing there this week - Darren Clarke especially is doing well. Jose Maria Olazabal was there for two rounds but missed the cut. I really hope he gets back to full time competition. I miss him. The Solheim Cup is going on. And on. And on. Apparently the morning matches were very long. It looked like most of them went the full...

US PGA diary

Padraig Harrington threw in a few Irish jokes when he hosted Tuesday’s Champions Dinner at a Minneapolis Hotel. Past Champions: Front Row (L-R) Dow Finsterwald, Shaun Micheel, Padraig Harrington, Doug Ford, Rich Beem, David Toms. Back Row (L-R) Mark Brooks, Davis Love III, Paul Azinger, Bobby Nichols, Bob Tway, Steve Elkington, Vijay Singh, and Tiger Woods with the Wanamaker trophy at the Champions'...

Allenby clawing for a major

The final major comes our way this week in the form of the PGA Championship . From Australia's point of view we have 13 golfer's teeing it up and there's been a glimmer of good form coming from a few of these guys. Robert Allenby has taken to the claw putting grip after advice from Vijay Singh supposedly and led to a second place finish at the WGC event last week. He's 190th in the putting stats this...

Pro tournaments can bring more than just golf

Starting today, Reno's Montreux Golf and Country Club will host the closest PGA Tour event to Sacramento. The Reno-Tahoe Open begins with a full field. There will be no Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson because the tournament is going head-to-head against a World Golf Championships event, but it has Paul Azinger, Steve Elkington and Rich Beem in the field. Reno-Tahoe makes me miss having a pro tournament...

Rain leaves greens wet and mild

Tiger Woods shooting a 64 makes perfect sense. Even defending AT&T National champion Anthony Kim having enough gusto in his game to fire a course-record 62 on Thursday seemed feasible. But the distance from Kim to Woods and Woods to Jim Furyk - occupied by the likes of D.A. Points, Bryce Molder, Steve Elkington and Daniel Chopra - well, that's a little tougher to explain. Unless you account for...

Kim leads Tiger by two at AT&T National

BETHESDA, Md., July 2 (UPI) -- Anthony Kim, winless since he captured this event a year ago, fired a course-record 8-under 62 Thursday for a two-shot lead at the AT&T National. Kim was one of the hottest golfers in the world for much of 2008, claiming two victories during the year, starring in the American Ryder Cup triumph and finishing among the top three in five other tournaments. He had had...

Love, Beem among British Open qualifiers

Former U.S. PGA Championship winners Davis Love III and Rich Beem qualified for the British Open on Monday, but Steve Elkington, winner of the 1995 American PGA Championship, bogeyed his final two holes and fell short. Jeff Overton won the first North American qualifying section at the TPC of Michigan, shooting a 14-under 130 over 36 holes. "I've never made it into a major, so I'm incredibly excited,"...
