Q&A: Natalie Gulbis at Pinehurst

Natalie Gulbis at a recent skills challenge. Zach Johnson looks on. (Photos courtesy of RSM McGladrey) NATALIE GULBIS IS ONE of the most recognizable female golfers on the planet. Only 26, Natalie is completing her eighth season on the LPGA Tour. Yes, eight seasons. It’s kind of hard to believe. Natalie has won one LPGA title and played on three victorious U.S. Solheim Cup teams. She has five...

Zach Johnson doesn't hit 300-yard drives, or light up press conferences with his candor. He's just a normal guy from Iowa. No wonder no one saw him coming

When Zach Johnson missed the cut by a shot at the 2006 PGA Championship, he thought he'd blown his chance at making the U.S. Ryder Cup team. That night, before joining his family for dinner, he sat in a restaurant parking lot trying to muster the resolve to exit the car. Johnson was miserable. (He made the team anyway and was a rare bright spot.)

Chris DiMarco and the Corporate Outing

CHRIS DIMARCO IS THROWING golf balls on the practice range of Pinehurst No. 2 on Monday. He is trying to hit a small pane of glass stamped with a PGA of America logo that is perched on a metal stand about 30 yards away. The object of this part of the skills challenge is to hit a low bullet-like shot that shatters the glass. (Maybe you’ve seen this stunt on the Golf Channel.) Fellow tour pros...

Gulbis, Johnson and DiMarco Kick Off McGladrey Team Finals

Chris DiMarco, Natalie Gulbis and Zach Johnson (Courtesy of Pinehurst Resort) I JUST RETURNED from a quick trip to Pinehurst for the start of The McGladrey Team Championship, a national amateur best-ball tournament conducted by the PGA of America. About 40 teams teed off today in the three-day finals that will be contested on Pinehurst’s Nos. 2, 4 and 8 courses. I attended a skills challenge...

A Trip to Pinehurst for The McGladrey Team Championship

(deltamike/Flickr) I’M IN PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA, for The McGladrey Team Championship, a national best-ball amateur tournament conducted by the PGA of America. The amateur teams at Pinehurst have already advanced through a local qualifying event and a section championship. This week is the finals, and each amateur team will be playing with their local PGA golf pro. I’ve known I was coming...

Big praise for tiny Tim Clark

Pouring putts into the cup almost at will, South Africa's Tim Clark raced five up by the turn before fending off a rally by America's Zach Johnson.

Americans win Presidents Cup

SAN FRANCISCO -- Zach Johnson lay spread-eagled on the 15th green, flat on his back after South Africa's Tim Clark holed yet another putt for yet another birdie. Call it a comedic compliment, because Johnson made five birdies on the back nine, including one at the 15th moments earlier, but Clark finished with seven straight 3s to deliver a knockout blow to Johnson, 4 and 3.

10 things that need to happen for an International win

Oh dear. I fear the worst here. The Internationals need to win 8 of the 12 singles matches on the final day of the 2009 Presidents Cup to win. Ana amazing last few holes from Tiger yesterday turned what might have been a one point margin into a three point one. For the Internationals to win, and for me to win my Presidents Cup wager with One Eyed Golfer , here's 10 things which need to happen. Angel...

Presidents Cup - more thoughts

There's a few more things Aussie Golfer would like to highlight before this week's Presidents Cup gets underway. I've always found the Presidents Cup format puzzling. IT differs from the Ryder Cup with four days of play and many more matches enabling all players on the course at once, except for Saturday. We have five morning matches and five afternoon matches. With 12 players on each team, two from...
