from George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press, Although the Wings will head to camp without a glaring weakness, there will be plenty of questions to answer. The Wings have more legitimate NHL talent than they have available roster spots. Quincey, Derek Meech and Jonathan Ericsson will battle for the final spot on defense. The Wings will get their first look at Ville Leino, 25, signed from the Finnish...

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Derek Meech has been named the 2007-08 Detroit Red Wings Rookie of the Year' by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association (DSBA). Meech, 24, appeared in 32 games for Detroit during the 2007-08 NHL regular season, finishing with 3 assists and averaging just over twelve minutes of ice time per game. It's easy to point to Tomas Holmstrom and Chris Chelios as the goats of the game. They certainly deserve it. Both of them made huge mistakes and really hurt their team. At this point, I’d not be opposed to inserting Jonathan Ericsson or Derek Meech in place of Chelios, who has had an awful series in [...]

Derek Meech played in the Red Wings' game against Columbus on Wednesday, but not as a defenseman. Meech played left wing in place of Valtteri Filppula, who is also expected to miss tonight's game at Nashville because of a groin injury. Meech played 3:29 on seven shifts with three hits and a takeaway.

Anti-Digger Bruce MacLeod says a vet's sitting tonite and Derek Meech is in the lineup. Oh...and he’ll be playing a wing. Meech will definitely play forward tonight, according to coach Mike Babcock. Why there’s a need for him up front isn't as clear. Aaron Downey will be in the lineup. So will Darren Helm. That means that one forward who played in Sunday's game in Columbus will be absent tonight, but...

Forty hours after he registered 8 shots on goal against Edmonton, in the midst of the best game a defenseman (other than Lidstrom) has had for the Wings this year, Derek Meech is now a popular fella with the Diggers.

According to TSN, the NHL has seen fit to suspend the Vancouver Canucks’ Jeff Cowan for his hit on Derek Meech at 11:45 of the first period of Saturday's game. Cowan received a charging penalty on the play. The hit had Meech in pain until well after he returned to the bench. He turned out [...]

TSN: Sources tell TSN that Vancouver Canucks forward Jeff Cowan has been suspended one game for his hit to the head on Detroit's Derek Meech. The incident occurred in the first period of the Canucks victory over the Red Wings on Saturday night. I was watching this game in a bar (shocking, I know) and didn't actually see the hit in question. Was a suspension warranted? Looking for video…

BOSTON -- These are especially good times for Red Wings defenseman Derek Meech. Because of an injury to Niklas Kronwall, Meech has gone from reserve to regular, appearing in a third consecutive game for only the second time of the season Saturday when the Wings beat the Bruins, 3-1. Meech played 10:47, had two shots on net and blocked a shot.

Defenseman Derek Meech doesn't know when he'll receive more playing time with the Red Wings, but he does know this: He'd definitely rather be in the NHL than in the minors. Meech was back in Detroit on Thursday morning after spending the past two weeks on a conditioning stint with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Wings' American Hockey League affiliate.

For the next two weeks, Derek Meech can let up on treating practices as games. The reserve defenseman for the Red Wings hasn't played much this season with Detroit, and Thursday, after practice, the club sent him to AHL affiliate Grand Rapids for a two-week conditioning stint in which he should play plenty of minutes.
