Bears Maul Penguins...No, Not on Animal Planet

Last night, the Hershey Bears gave rude notice to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (and the rest of the AHL, for that matter) that they are going to be a team to be reckoned with this year. The Bears got a goal from Keith Aucoin 96 seconds into the game and never looked back as Hershey gutted and left on the ice their opponents in an 8-4 win. In the mauling, the Bears... - Went 5-for-7 on the power...

Three Too Many Games

The Washington Capitals still have three more games to round out the preseason. And the Capitals are very close to 23 man roster now that they have cut Keith Aucoin (sent to Hershey) and Jakub Cutta (released by the team). It makes me wonder, why not sacrifice the last three games to the regular season and have the ability for the Capitals play every team for both a home and an away game. I

Post Practice Briefing

In case you missed it earlier, the Caps demoted Keith Aucoin and cut loose invitee Jakub Cutta, thus reducing the camp roster to 29 players (not including Brian Pothier). And if you take out Tyler Sloan, Simeon Varlamov and Grant McNeill - all of whom appear to be Hershey-bound - that leaves the Caps with 26 players and three cuts left to make. It's looking like Chris Bourque and Quintin Laing will...

Aucoin To Hershey, Cutta To Europe

Center Keith Aucoin just told me on his way out of the KCI that has been assigned to Hershey. This, of course, is not a surprise since he was signed to be a depth player. Defenseman Jakub Cutta, meantime, has been cut. He was a training camp invitee and now plans to return to Europe, I'm told. He really struggled in three preseason games, often fumbling the puck or failing to clear it or just...Please...

Sorry, Peter And Olie: No Jersey Retirement For You

On the heels of this morning's announcement that no one will ever again wear the number eleven for the Caps comes the implicit news that anyone should feel free to wear number twelve or thirty-seven (paging Keith Aucoin). As related by Craig Custance, Ted Leonsis discussed the topic of further jersey retirements: He said the criteria was strict: You'd better be a Hall of Famer or lead the Caps

Jeff Friesen Redux?

As you already know, the Caps signed free agent forward Keith Aucoin to a two-year deal today (details here). Whether the move is simply a depth move or a harbinger of things to come remains to be seen, but in Aucoin the Caps get "a hard-skating, hustler who always gives 100%" and who "has proven he can rack up impressive point totals at lower levels" (he was second in the AHL in scoring in 2006

Caps Sign Aucoin

The Caps keep their free agent signings up by signing up Keith Aucoin. A centerman that spent last season in limbo with Carolina Hurricanes and Albany River Rats. Aucoin could be a replacement for someone else who is still a long way away from getting to a contract agreement with GMGM, according to Tarik and Corey anyway. Clearly Aucoin will be a third or fourth line center, if not spending

Caps Sign Keith Aucoin

The Caps have signed free agent forward Keith Aucoin to a two-year contract. The 29-year-old split last season between Carolina and Albany (AHL), playing 38 games for both teams. More on this later. In other news that could be related to this move, I heard from a source last night that Brooks Laich, a 25-year-old restricted free agent, and the team remain far apart on a new contract. I was also told...

Caps Sign Keith Aucoin

The Caps just made an interesting announcement , inking center Keith Aucoin to a two-year contract. This could mean that Sergei Fedorov isn't coming back or, more likely, Aucoin could either center the fourth line and/or spend time in Hershey. Aucoin, 29, split last season between the Carolina Hurricanes and the AHL's Albany River Rats. In 38 combined games, he tallied five goals/eight assists for...

Aucoin, Conboy's journey to Canes

There's no question that Keith Aucoin, Ryan Bayda and Tim Conboy are missed in Albany, but you won't hear Albany coach Tom Rowe complain.
