Please Pass the Anthonys

Let me start out by saying that Baltimore's own Laura Lippman should feel most proud this weekend. Not only did the 2008 Bouchercon go off with few or no faults in Charm City, but the wonderful Ms. Lippman walked away with a triple-play of commendations--one Macavity Award, one Barry Award, and now a pair of Anthony Awards. I guess she'll be investing in some new shelves in the near future. As

Filatov to Syracuse

Nikita Filatov was assigned to the Syracuse along with Derek Dorsett. Aaron Rome, Craig MacDonald, and Derek MacKenzie also cleared waivers and are being assigned to the Crunch. The Russian Federation hasn’t processed Filatov’s papers so that he can play for the Sudbury Wolves. Filatov is able to be called up at any time by playing for Syracuse. It’s going to be interesting to see how he does down...

The Decision Has Been Made

The Blue Jackets have placed Aaron Rome, Derek MacKenzie, and Craig MacDonald on waivers. Teams will have until noon tomorrow to pick them up off of waivers, if they are not picked up, they will be sent to Syracuse. I sincerely hope that Rome isn’t picked up, he’s such a great defenseman, and I still think he should have had that 8th spot, which goes to Marc Methot. It’s a sad day for this Blue Jackets...

Jackets get closer to the final roster

Portzline discusses the decisions to be made yet: There are 18 forwards in camp. Right winger Raffi Torres (separated shoulder) will start the season on injured reserve, so the Blue Jackets will need to cut at least four players. Those on the bubble for the last spot are Nikita Filatov, Derek Dorsett, Derek MacKenzie, Alexandre Picard and [...]

Minor deal

Joakim Lindstrom to Anaheim for a conditional draft pick. No biggie, this. Lindstrom had some skill, but he was one of those guys who just never showed enough at the NHL level to earn a full-time slot. And as he was rumored to be on his way back to Europe this season — well, even a [...]

Columbus Signs MacDonald and MacKenzie

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed free agent left wing Craig MacDonald to a one-year contract and re-signed center Derek MacKenzie to a two-year contract, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today. Both are two-way NHL-American Hockey League contracts and keeping with club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed. MacDonald, 31, registered two goals and nine assists for 11 points...

Anthony Loves Us

I’m particularly humbled this morning to find my name on the list of 2008 Anthony Award nominees, especially as it appears with such illustrious company in the “Best Web Site” category. When I started working with January Magazine in the late 1990s and then spun The Rap Sheet off from there as a blog two years ago, I wasn’t trying to win commendations, but just giving myself a forum in which to
