BOSTON -- Derek Meech's greatest asset is his skating, which at the moment is helping showcase his versatility. His speed is what has helped him make the transition from defense to forward, where he played for a fifth straight game Saturday as the Red Wings faced the Bruins at TD Banknorth Garden.

A bruised knee kept Brad Stuart out of the lineup Saturday night against the New York Rangers and gave Derek Meech an opportunity to play for the first time this season. Meech won a battle with Kyle Quincey for the Red Wings' last roster spot on defense, but it was Quincey who played first this season.

from George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press, Although the Wings will head to camp without a glaring weakness, there will be plenty of questions to answer. The Wings have more legitimate NHL talent than they have available roster spots. Quincey, Derek Meech and Jonathan Ericsson will battle for the final spot on defense. The Wings will get their first look at Ville Leino, 25, signed from the Finnish...

It's easy to point to Tomas Holmstrom and Chris Chelios as the goats of the game. They certainly deserve it. Both of them made huge mistakes and really hurt their team. At this point, I’d not be opposed to inserting Jonathan Ericsson or Derek Meech in place of Chelios, who has had an awful series in [...]

Derek Meech played in the Red Wings' game against Columbus on Wednesday, but not as a defenseman. Meech played left wing in place of Valtteri Filppula, who is also expected to miss tonight's game at Nashville because of a groin injury. Meech played 3:29 on seven shifts with three hits and a takeaway.

Anti-Digger Bruce MacLeod says a vet's sitting tonite and Derek Meech is in the lineup. Oh...and he’ll be playing a wing. Meech will definitely play forward tonight, according to coach Mike Babcock. Why there’s a need for him up front isn't as clear. Aaron Downey will be in the lineup. So will Darren Helm. That means that one forward who played in Sunday's game in Columbus will be absent tonight, but...

Forty hours after he registered 8 shots on goal against Edmonton, in the midst of the best game a defenseman (other than Lidstrom) has had for the Wings this year, Derek Meech is now a popular fella with the Diggers.
