How waiver exemption paved way for Backstrom's NHL career

More photos » by Paul Battaglia - AP Browse more photos » I have a few more details on how the Wild ended up landing Niklas Backstrom up at Globe on Hockey today, including the tidbit that Manny Fernandez was on the trade block long before he was ever salary dumped to Boston in 2007. It's hard to believe, too, that they thought they had their No. 1 in Josh Harding more than three years...

All eyes on the Monster

More photos » by NATHAN DENETTE - AP Browse more photos » Jonas Gustavsson has made quite an impression here in Toronto so far, essentially rescuing the Leafs goaltending situation after returning from a groin injury. His save percentage is up to .918, he has a winning record and Toronto's on as much of a roll as you can be on after winning three out of seven games (3-0-4). Tonight, the...

Something Tells Me People Will Have Opinions About This

Check this out… The team surrendered nearly three goals a game during the regular season last year, an unheard of number in Detroit. Osgood was largely to blame for that, and he wouldn’t argue. But the Red Wings came within a whisker of winning another Cup. Why? Because Osgood raised his game several notches, and was a genuine Conn Smythe candidate until the Penguins captured Game Seven....

Huet is Only Thing Going Wrong with Blackhawks...Too Bad He's the Goalie

There is no more Dominik Hasek, Patrick Roy, or Curtis Joseph. Martin Brodeur is still a pretty good goaltender, but the era of great goalies in the NHL seems to be slowly diminishing. Despite this overall trend, there is definitely someone out there better than Chicago netminder Cristobal Huet. Antti Niemi, the Blackhawks' backup, may become the starter more if Huet continues to struggle.

Saturday Links: "Hoping for 2 points and a solid 60 minutes in North America" Edition

Hell, maybe an injury to one of the Blues key defensive forwards will kick a sense of purpose into the heads of the Blues from the start of a game for once. As a side note, I unfortunately have to replace my NHL '10 disc for the Xbox 360. This serves as a shout out to the EA sports support team as they made the conversation relatively painless in terms of figuring shit out. It's in the game, indeed....

Thanks, Olie...

Olaf Kolzig retired today. There will be a lot of words and pixels devoted to Kolzig’s career in Washington – the long road he took to taking on the role as the number one netminder, the incredible run to the Stanley Cup finals in 1998, the playoff trials against the Penguins, the ups, the downs, the records. While he has a special place in the hearts of Caps fans who have followed the...

Hasek A Possibility For Czech Olympic Team

from CTV Olympics, Dominik Hasek and Jaromir Jagr headline the list of 60 players under consideration for the Czech Republic’s 2010 Olympic men’s hockey team. Hasek, who came out of retirement this month, is one of eight goaltenders who will compete for a spot on the team. Florida Panthers netminder Tomas Vokoun, who beat Russia in the bronze medal game in 2006, is likely the leading candidate...

Bertuzzi the latest Wing to return to roost

Who's next? Sergei Fedorov, after he's finished with his tour of duty in the KHL? Every Red Wings should take one thing away from Todd Bertuzzi's return: If you don't burn any bridges when you leave Detroit, you have a good shot to return. General manager Ken Holland likes to bring back former Wings, usually when they don't want as much money and are hungry...

Why you'll watch - February and March - 7-24-09

Something we've done the past two offseasons is examine the recently revealed schedule, and just in case you needed a little bit more enticement to watch a team like the Penguins, come up with reasons to watch all 82 games on the slate. So without any further delay, here's why you'll be watching in February and March (February's schedule is short due to the Olympics). Feb. 1 - vs. Sabres - Because...

Day Four -- Scrimmage II

It was Scrimmage, Part Deux for the young prospects at Capitals Development Camp this afternoon and a chance for the Banshees (Group B) to exact a measure of revenge against the Aardvarks (Group A). Well… that was the plan. And it looked like a great plan early, as the Banshees at least stood their ground in a scoreless first period (we’re back to 20-20-20 minutes). But the score, or lack...

They Provided Us Thrills

from Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated, 10. Mario Lemieux The icon of Pittsburgh’s 1991 and ‘92 Stanley Cup champions did not have speed. But even without that fundamental building block of excitement, he was thrilling because of his unique ability to take time and make it stand still.... 9. Dominik Hasek A goaltender? Sure. Hasek was from the Czech Republic but he probably vacationed...
