Detroit Red Wings defensemen Brian Rafalski and Jonathan Ericsson returned to practice today at Joe Louis Arena and are expected to play Thursday against the San Jose Sharks. The Wings sent defensemen Doug Janik back to Grand Rapids (AHL).

Red Wings defensemen Brian Rafalski and Jonathan Ericsson were too ill to play Tuesday night against the Bruins. But defensemen Niklas Kronwall, who missed practice Monday along with Rafalski and Ericsson, was in the lineup, and Doug Janik was called up from Grand Rapids.

Kris Newbury played in his fifth exhibition game on Friday night, but he isn't in the Wings' immediate roster plans. The Wings have asked for waivers on three forwards -- Newbury, Jeremy Williams and Evan McGrath -- and defensemen Andy Delmore and Doug Janik. If they clear and there are no other injuries to the Wings, they all will be sent to Grand Rapids.
