Back in June, the decision by Islanders general manager Garth Snow to trade down twice from the fifth spot in the NHL draft to select Windsor Spitfires center Josh Bailey with the ninth overall pick was met with boos from a Coliseum crowd attending a draft party. But there were cheers last night when the decision to keep Bailey on the roster rather than return him to juniors was announced before the...

For Islanders fans with a keen sense of history, the start-over-and-build-from-within plan that Garth Snow is instituting is reminiscent of Bill Torrey's original blueprint for success.

Please note, the following is complete fiction. It is, in my mind, what should have taken place after the Islanders practiced today. Picture the scene, if you will. It's time for Scott Gordon's media availability, and GM Garth Snow is...

Let's rank the people in the Isles organization that rookie coach Scott Gordon must get along with to keep his job for more than two years (going rate for NYI coaches): 1. Charles Wang. 2. Garth Snow. 3. Rick DiPietro....

You know Garth Snow's Islander youth movement is in full swing when you meet Kyle Okposo, one of the poster boys of this the-kids-are-our-future theme to the season. Let's put it this way: he isn't allowed to legally drink, and he would probably need a pretty good fake ID to get by a bouncer. He looks that young.

The Islanders might be the oldest "young" team in recent memory in the NHL. Despite general manager Garth Snow's commitment to rebuilding from the ground up with youth, this is a team with nine key players ranging in age from 31 to 37 who must set an example and produce if the Isles want to better the painful last-place finish in the Eastern Conference forecast for them by so many pundits.

Investing $20.5 million over five years in a 30-year-old Swiss defenseman with only three seasons of NHL experience might seem extravagant. However, general manager Garth Snow's major free-agent move to acquire Mark Streit not only might cure a power play ranked 29th in the league but should provide an element of slash and dash that has been missing from the Islanders' blue line.

On his 19th birthday yesterday, Islanders first-round draft pick Josh Bailey received the gift of a lifetime - a three-year NHL entry-level contract. Even though Bailey has been limited by a minor injury to just one preseason appearance, general manager Garth Snow and coach Scott Gordon indicated it's still possible he could start the season on the NHL roster.

If there's a poster boy for the Islanders' regime change this season, it's forward Jeff Tambellini, whose performance (or lack thereof) was at the root of the split between general manager Garth Snow and former coach Ted Nolan. Tambellini tied for second in the AHL with 38 goals in 57 games at Bridgeport but managed only one goal in 31 appearances with the Isles.

When Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli and Islanders counterpart Garth Snow agreed to the Sept. 11, 2007, trade that placed Petteri Nokelainen in Boston, both sides included parameters that hinted at the uncertainty of the forward's NHL future.

Islanders fans have heard a lot lately about general manager Garth Snow's commitment to a youth movement. But the greenest rookie of all this season is new coach Scott Gordon. He'll make his NHL coaching debut after a 14-season minor-league career when rookie camp opens tomorrow in Syosset ahead of the full training camp that starts Saturday in Moncton, New Brunswick.

It's natural to assume that Islanders general manager Garth Snow zeroed in on career minor-league coach Scott Gordon as the replacement for former head coach Ted Nolan because he and Gordon have a similar background as goaltenders from New England.
