To his teammates, Chris Simon isn't a stick-swinging, skate-stomping fiend. To the NHL, he is an out-of-control enforcer. The New York Islanders forward was given a 30-game suspension yesterday, breaking the mark of 25 games he was hit with last March, and that Flyer Jesse Boulerice was given in October.

AS EXPECTED, Flyers defenseman Randy Jones was suspended by the NHL yesterday for his check on Boston's Patrice Bergeron. And also as expected, the penalty was nowhere near as severe as the previous suspensions of Steve Downie and Jesse Boulerice. Jones was benched by league disciplinarian Colin Campbell for two games.

Chris Simon returned to NHL action after serving a 20-game suspension at the same time that Jesse Boulerice began his 25-game sentence for a similar stick-to-the-head fit of rage. There's no linkage between the two incidents -- or with Steve Downie's reckless renegade run at Dean McAmmond (a 20-game violation) -- but it does make you wonder about the role of the tough guy in today's game.

He has done it in the past in another league and gets away with in the NHL. Flyers tough guy Jesse Boulerice can consider himself fortunate to be suspended only 25 games, Wes Goldstein says, as the league fails to get the right message across.

The 20-game suspension to Steve Downie was supposed to send a message to the NHL about reckless hits. As we saw yesterday with Jesse Boulerice, however, head shots are still in vogue among the league's marginal thugs. Tonight, Phoenix's Craig Weller put his name up for consideration by the league office for suspension after clotheslining Predators agitator Jordin Tootoo in the 3rd period. With the...

As we wait to see how many games Philly's Jesse Boulerice will be forced to miss after cross-checking Canucks forward Ryan Kesler across the jaw last night, we can't help but by reminded of some of hockey's more infamous stick-related incidents. Below are some of the worst of the worst and the punishment the League doled out (or didn't) in response. Honorable mention: Dino Ciccarelli on Luke

From Tom Gulitti at Fire & Ice, Enforcer Cam Janssen might have injured his shoulder tonight because of the league’s new Reebok Edge sweaters. His sweater ripped during his two first period fights with Philadelphia’s Jesse Boulerice. That might have helped Boulerice pull Janssen's jersey over his head in both altercations and win both decisively. Arron Asham also had his sweater tear during his fight...
