Jimmy Howard got home around 6 a.m. Sunday to the delight of his dog, Vez, who jumped into his arms and then curled up next to Howard when he tried to get a few hours of sleep. The Wings spent Sunday recovering from a grueling 11-day trip and returned to practice Monday — but it wasn't exactly a high-tempo event. "Just by watching practice you can tell we've got a lot...

With Valtteri Filppula out 6-8 weeks because of a broken bone in his right wrist, this almost certainly necessitates the Wings break up Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk because of a shortage of skilled centers. Zetterberg and Datsyuk started the season separately, anyways, and only were reunited because neither was doing much offensively. Now both have gotten going, with Datsyuk having racked up...

What with meal time and nap time and then getting to the rink hours before the 7:30 p.m. game against the Kings, the Red Wings by and large didn't catch up on the whole "balloon boy" story until after they'd gotten back home — at which point they were mostly in disbelief over how the whole saga unfolded. "I couldn't believe it," Kris Draper said....

Ansar Khan reports that the Wings are going to give Datsyuk another game off to recover from the mysterious upper body injury. Apparently, he’s “close,” which is about as vague as it gets. Brad May will be back in the lineup against Colorado, though, at the expense of Kris Draper or Kirk Maltby, apparently. Also, Chris Osgood [...]

What happened: Right after killing off a Kings power play, the Wings gave up a goal at 5:41 of the first period when Dustin Brown swiped in Matt Greene's shot that had sneaked in from the point. The Kings hit two posts in the first period. Then Jonathan Ericsson scored 3:34 into the second period when he caught the puck after Justin Abdelkader won the faceoff and fired a shot that beat Jonathan...

Update from Joe Louis Arena today: Neither Niklas Kronwall nor Pavel Datsyuk were on the ice for practice, and coach Mike Babcock said both are being checked out, Datsyuk for an "upper-body injury." I'll update on here as soon as I know more. I spoke to Kronwall, though, and he said his absence was "just precautionary." He said he hurt a leg during Tuesday's game...

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail, Against Buffalo, coach Mike Babcock sat out two aging role players, Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby, which meant that among the 12 forwards in the lineup, only five were there for the start of last season: Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Dan Cleary, Valtteri Filppula and Tomas Holmstrom. Sometimes, the answer may be just as simple as that. Trying to integrate all those...

Quick update from HSBC Arena in Buffalo: Darren Helm, who has been out four weeks with a sprained AC joint, will return to the lineup tonight. He'll center a line with Brad May and Patrick Eaves. That means Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby are healthy scratches.

Let’s assume for a second that Kirk Maltby could, if necessary, play tonite..even with the Charley Horse. If that’s the case? When’s the last time we saw both he and Kris Draper as healthy scratches? I could do the research on that, but my left temple hurts. Me? I have no idea why Eaves (or May for that matter) is in there instead of Draper. But I’m sure Uncle Mike has his reasons....

Quick update from Joe Louis Arena today: Kirk Maltby was able to finish practice after developing a charley horse in his right leg after colliding with Justin Abdelkader, and Darren Helm is ready to play tomorrow night at Buffalo. Mike Babcock said he wasn't sure if Helm (out the last four weeks because of a clavicle injury) would play, but Helm said he's good to go. Early in practice,...
