Like me, many people were baffled when Jeff Finger was awarded a hefty raise by the Toronto Maple Leafs, while Kurt Sauer signed with the Coyotes for the very reasonable sum of $1.75M/year. The Phoenix Coyotes signed veteran defenseman Kurt Sauer to a four-year contract Tuesday, filling a gap created when they sent a pair of defenders to the Florida Panthers in a draft-day trade for Olli Jokinen. Sauer, 27, played for the Colorado Avalanche last season, and had a goal and five assists in 54 regular-season games. He added a goal in 10 postseason contests with Colorado.

Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed defenseman Kurt Sauer to a four-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. “We are excited to add Kurt to our defensive corps,” said Maloney. “We see him as someone who can match up against top forwards and handle a lot of ice time.” -- From the Phoenix Coyotes
