from Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Hall of Fame center Ron Francis is fond of telling about the time he asked Mario Lemieux how he prepared for training camp, and Lemieux responded that, about a month beforehand, he stopped ordering french fries with his club sandwich. But such attitudes and actions are no more a part of the NHL today than bench-clearing brawls and the Oakland Seals....

Believe it or not, there was a time when Andy Hilbert saw himself as a goal scorer. Maybe not the next Mario Lemieux, but a guy capable of producing more than 30 goals a season, a feat he accomplished twice with Providence in the AHL.

I just finished my third week of recreational hockey. The goal in week #1 was to survive, and my modest goal in week #2 was to accept the fact I wasn't Mario Lemieux. Tonight, I wanted to score. I don't remember scoring a single goal in my entire house league career. I played for several years at Swansea, and I'm pretty sure had I scored it would have been rather memorable. Going goalless my first...

Ever since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the most popular man in Pittsburgh — aside from Mario Lemieux, of course — has always been the Steelers backup quarterback. Always. When Kordell Stewart couldn’t hit the broad side of Plaxico Burress’ house, Steelers fans started calling for Tommy Maddox. When everyone realized Tommy would never be more [...]

I’m here to help. So we’re 12 games into the Penguins’ annual mediocre start of their season. Fans have been talked out of jumping off the Roberto Clemente bridge (slight exaggeration). Wild rumors are circulating about Mario Lemieux, once again, being in the best shape of his life (OK, I made that one up too). That said, there are some valid criticisms that deserve to be leveled towards this incarnation...

from Seth Rorabaugh of Empty Netters, A popular question for hockey fans in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s was who was a better player: Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux? There were viable arguments to either side of that debate. Gretzky had all the records. Lemieux had lesser teammates to work with. Etc. Either way, it was a simple argument that only had two choices. Things are a little bit more complex...

In this morning’s Tennessean, Brad Schrade delves into just how Boots Del Biaggio established a reputation in the NHL that had him on the fast track towards majority ownership of a team. Basically, he cozied his way along, leveraging ties to Luc Robitaille, Mario Lemieux, and Mike Eruzione to work his way from an ownership interest in a Canadian junior team all the way up to the NHL: “My gut feeling...

The Peerless Prognosticator is ON THE AIR!!! Tonight, it is the first chapter of Volume IV in the continuing drama, “Ovechkin vs. Crosby.” The Caps travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins, and to get ready for the big game, we took a trip to the Mario Lemieux Memorial Home for Aged Penguins to see what brethren of the flightless foul thought about tonight’s contest… Tennessee Tuxedo, you spent...

The Mario Lemieux goal on his first shift in his first game stands in time as both a mythic event as well as a historic one. Tonight, there stood something very rare to make a great first impression with the Predators hosted by the Stars. Fabian Brunnstrom, a well sought after FA, scored 3 goals in one night in his NHL debut game. Congratulations, Fabian! Now how many people are scrambling to

This game was certainly not a good birthday present for the big man, Mario Lemieux. Oy. We'll get to that in a second but first, I just want to mention that FSN Pittsburgh has a series of commercials for the Penguins that involve real live penguins that are actually really cute. For instance, in one of them, the real penguins are "talking" to FSN Pittsburgh reporter Dan Potash. (We need to find them...

Great offensive performers in the NHL often come in pairs; think Wayne Gretzky & Jari Kurri, or Mario Lemieux & Jaromir Jagr. When it comes to today’s prominent goal-scorers, however, which ones are the most dependent on a particular playmaker to set them up? To answer that question, I dug through the goal-scoring details from the 2007-8 season and took a look at the leading snipers, to answer the...
