Curious Decisions

Calgary certainly made more of a game of it than I expected last night. Kudos once again have to go out to the third line, who made the most out of the soft match-ups again. In addition, Mark Giordano probably had his best game of the season and was held off the scoresheet by bad luck alone. The 4th line - previously celebrated - finally looked like a 4th line last night. Which leads me to the topic...

The Friday Fermentable: Thanks to Mark Giordano at Robert Oatley Vineyards and Open Thread

When you read The Friday Fermentable posts I've written, you know that I am not a wine writer or connoisseur but rather a wine enthusiast. ( The posts by my colleague Erleichda, however, are far more content-rich.) My original post launching this feature details my wine philosophy, one that reflects my general philosophy about life: enjoy life, learn about everything you can, but don't be a snooty,...

Musings of Interest: Mark Giordano

A lot of virtual ink has been spilled over a this seemingly minor, depth defenseman the last few seasons. It's not only due to the contract dispute/flight to Russia thing though. Giordano is a genuinely interesting player, beyond the circumstances that have surrounded him the last couple seasons. Matt sums up the notables in that last link above: - Signed as an undrafted 20-year-old in the summer of...

Eurohockey stats

The Flames don't have a lot of European players or prospects. In fact, Calgary might have the most jingoistic roster in the whole league. Still, there were/are a couple of Flames connections playing overseas every now and then. I tried in vain to follow Mark Giordano's progress last season, for example. Anyways, for those unaware, Eurohockey.net is a pretty decent stat/roster resource for the various...

It's (kinda) official...

...the Flames have the heaviest blueline in the league, cap-wise .** 24.250M. That number includes Warrener and Eriksson, who continue to hang around, but not Mark Giordano, since his contract details are still shrouded in mystery. Right now, Calgary sits about 1.3M above than 2nd place Anaheim (who boast Pronger, Neidermayer, Schneider and Beauchemin in their top 4), approximately 2M more than Detroit...

Taking stock

With activity slowing down and the Flames already making the bulk of their moves, it's time to take stock of what's been done so far. In: Curtis Glencross (1.2M/year), Rene Bourque (RFA), Mark Giordano (800k?), Jim Vandermeer (1.63M) (2.3M), Mike Cammalleri (3.35M), Brandon Prust (500k), Curtis McElhinney (650k) Other: Pete Vandermeer, Ryan Wilson (farm filler), Kyle Greentree, David Van Der Gulik...

Flames Bring Back Giordano

From the Calgary Flames: Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the signing of defenseman Mark Giordano. “Mark is an NHL player and we are glad to have him back,” said Sutter. “He was a good player when he left to play in Russia and has improved playing against European players on the larger ice. He is a year older and year more mature.” The Flames also re-signed Brandon Prust...
