Morning roundup: Guess who's back?

(Richard A. Lipski/The Washington Post) I'll give you a hint: It's not Eminem, and it's definitely not Michael Nylander. From Tarik's preview of tonight's game in Tampa: Alex Ovechkin will return from a two-game suspension as the Capitals seek to set a franchise record for consecutive wins against a single opponent with their 12th straight triumph over the 19th-place Lightning. Interestingly, the Capitals...

McPhee: Two-game suspension 'excessive'

George McPhee was a guest on DC101's Elliot in the Morning today, and the Caps' GM made it clear that he respectfully disagrees with the NHL's decision to suspend Alex Ovechkin for two games. "It was a five-minute major, we had to kill off a five-minute penalty, and we lost the best player in the game for the rest of the game," McPhee said. "We only had him for three minutes of ice time,...

Caps Cap Issues

Pierre LeBrun answers some fan mail… The Washington Capitals are again poised to be one the most injury-plagued teams in the league after finishing with the fourth-most games lost last year. The problem wouldn’t be so dramatic if Michael Nylander and his ridiculous contract were over in the KHL right now. When (if ever) is something going to happen on this front and allow the Capitals...

Tonight's lineup: Canadiens at Caps

Michal Neuvirth will make his season debut tonight at Verizon Center as the Caps look to win their second straight game and for the sixth time in their past seven contests. Carey Price, meanwhile, will get the nod for the Canadiens. The Caps, as you know by now, are really banged up. They're so banged up, in fact, owner Ted Leonsis blogged about it earlier today: No Alexander Semin; Mike Knuble; Boyd...

OK... We Give, We've Had Enough

I like Michael Nylander. I think he's a solid professional on the ice and (he said, biting his lip) equally so off the ice in the midst of this "Whither Nylander" mini-series. I sympathized with his predicament, he being merely a party to a contract who chose to implement rights under that contract to have a say in where he plied his trade. We even had a nice long entry all ready to go pretty...

The Latest On Nylander

from Capitals Insider, The ever-changing Michael Nylander-to-the-KHL story may or may not be nearing its conclusion, with more information leaking out by the day… According to a source close to CSKA, the two sides had almost agreed on a deal - until the Moscow club balked at one of the clauses proposed by Nylander’s agent. The clause, the source tells us, was Nylander’s ability to...

Caps 5, Isles 4 (SO)

The Caps beat the Islanders, 5-4, in the shootout tonight. But the buzz after the game was about a player who wasn't in the lineup. According to a report on RDS.ca, Michael Nylander has agreed to be loaned to Dynamo Minsk of the KHL. Forward Michael Nylander agreed with Dynamo Minsk of the Continental League in Russia, according to what RDS has learned. But GM George McPhee said he could not confirm...

McPhee on Nyls: 'There's some things that are going on' (updated)

GM George McPhee acknowledged that Michael Nylander cleared waivers this afternoon, but he declined to shed much more light on the awkward situation other than to hint that a deal could be in the works. Earlier in the day, Coach Bruce Boudreau said that Nylander will not be returning to the Caps. McPhee, though, stopped short of confirming that. "Some decisions have been made," McPhee said....

The Senators Twitter feed has posted the prospect update for this week. Here is the link. http://senators.nhl.com/v2/ext/PDFs/Prospect_Update-091109.pdf Jared Cowen had a big week for the Spokane Chiefs, registering 4 points in 3 games and a +7. Patrick Wiercioch also continued his strong start to the season. Hes got 9 points in 10 games with the University of Denver. A couple of people had been asking...

Boudreau on Nyls: 'Michael wasn't going to be a good fit' (updated)

I haven't received word on whether or not Michael Nylander has cleared waivers. But this much is pretty certain at this point: It doesn't seem that No. 92 will be returning to Washington.

Green returns; Ovechkin, Schultz, Nylander missing

Practice just started at KCI, and I don't see Alex Ovechkin, Jeff Schultz or Michael Nylander on the ice. Ovechkin, or course, is out with a strain near his left shoulder; Schultz left Friday's game with a lower body injury; and Nylander was placed on waivers on Saturday. Nylander is scheduled to clear waivers at noon today. Mike Green, however, has returned after missing Saturday's game with an upper...

Nylander Put on Waivers

Michael Nylander has been put on waivers, Capitals Insider reports. This means the veteran Swede has agreed to waive his no-movement clause. Any team can claim him until noon tomorrow, but if no GM picks him off the wire it’s still no guarantee he’ll be put in the minors, writes Tarik. Nyls’ $4.875 million cap hit [...]
