DENVER - The Flyers received some positive news yesterday: Randy Jones' right-hip injury is not as severe as they had feared. The team said the defenseman would be sidelined for seven to nine weeks instead of the original projection of 12 to 16 weeks.

THE NEWS ON Randy Jones is worse than the Flyers expected: He will be out 12 to 16 weeks recovering from what could only be called significant surgery. He has a labrum tear, torn cartilage and torn ligaments, all in his right hip, and a groin pull.

Another day, another revelation that a Flyers defenseman appears headed for surgery. Randy Jones, expected to be in the Flyers' second defensive pairing, said it is inevitable that he will undergo hip surgery that would sideline him for six to eight weeks.
