Wherein I Rant: "And Tonight's First Star, from Your Dallas Stars, Kerry Fraser!"

Yeah , it's politically incorrect to call out the officials when you lose, and normally I wouldn't. Photo: MIKE FUENTES - AP (from The News & Observer Online ) 'Cause normally they do a great (okay good ) job and if they blow one you gotta overcome, right? But when this (see photo - click to embiggen) isn't a penalty, something's wrong. Don't get me wrong, I like a good open ice hit as much as...

No goalie move yet

On Sunday, the Hurricanes announced that they have reassigned forward Zach Boychuk to the Albany River Rats. This, supposedly, will be to make room for Ray Whitney to return from his “upper body injury”. All reports indicate that The Wizard will be back in the lineup on Veterans Day. This is a bit of good news. There’s a big surprise, though. Even when Cam Ward was kept overnight...

Jackets 3, Hurricanes 2

CBJ faced off last night against the struggling Hurricanes. A team that has had a horrible season so far, played the night before (losing to the equally woeful Leafs), and is without their two biggest offensive threats in Eric Staal and ex-Jacket Ray Whitney (which was a bit of a disappointment, as Whits is on [...]

Rumour Mill for November 3

We'll start in Montreal, where it's very interesting that Carey Price will be starting tonight against Atlanta. Some rumours continue to swirl that one of Price or Halak are on their way out, possibly to Chicago. Rumours also suggest that Andrei Kostitsyn and Georges Laraque could both end up in the AHL. I think it may be time for the Kostitsyn's to be packaged together and dealt. Kessel returns to...

Hurricanes Struggle

After making the semi-finals in the 2009 playoffs, it appeared that the Carolina Hurricanes would have a strong 2009/10 season. So far that hasn’t been the case. The Hurricanes had a solid start winning two of their first four games, including a 7-2 victory over the Florida Panthers, but they haven’t won any games since. This gives Carolina a league leading eight game losing streak. That...

Road trip starts badly for Canes

The Hurricanes continued their annual late October extended road trip in desperate need of a win. The Islanders were a winless team, but have been playing good hockey. Unfortunately for the Canes, this was the night the Isles finally got into the win column. After falling behind 3-1, Carolina mounted a third period rally to tie the game, which was ultimately settled in the shootout. The home team converted...

Bevy of Canes miss Thursday practice; news from the farm

A day after making the best save of this young season, Canes goaltender Cam Ward sat out Thursday’s practice. He was joined by Eric Staal, who has not been playing at 100%. Also missing from practice were Matt Cullen and Ray Whitney, who had two goals against the Pens in the 3-2 loss on Wednesday. There’s no indication of why they say out, but I don’t think it was to attend opening...

Penguins 3, Hurricanes 2 (OT - SO - 2-1)

The Canes came out hopping tonight, and you had to think the first road loss might be at hand. The Pens, however, didn't feel the same way and acted like a team that has won the Stanley Cup. They didn't panic and weathered the storm. The Canes continued to press, and probably got a bit too caught up in it. Ruutu laid a big hit on Letang , and one of the Canes D got caught pinching. That allowed #17...
