The fall of communism in Eastern Europe at once marked the end of a sordid, even tragic chapter in international athletic competition and opened a world of opportunity that helped change the face of American sports. A flood of talented athletes free to emigrate, compete against the best and earn millions of dollars radically altered boxing, hockey, tennis and other professional sports in the U.S. "It...

There seems to be some uncertainty as to when Alex Ovechkin will return to the lineup. Ovechkin remarked in an interview with Dmitry Chesnokov that he will miss 4-5 weeks. The Capitals issued a statment disputing the validity of this report. Whatever, it appears Ovechkin will be out a while longer, whether that is few games or a few weeks. Russian machine might not break, but it occasionally gets dinged....

from Gary Graves of USA TODAY, As Knuble’s role takes shape with the defending Southeast Division champions — he was projected to play on the top line with Ovechkin when he signed July 1, but his first two games were with the second unit — he has made inroads. The club named him an alternate captain, the first time the 6-3, 223-pound Toronto native recalls starting a season with that...

Alexander Semin Theme: “The only thing that should surprise us is that there are still some things that can surprise us.” For a guy who provides little for public consumption (absent the odd quote about Sidney Crosby), Alexander Semin is chock full of surprises. Last year, Semin was 34-45-79, +25. But that was in only 62 games. On an 82-game basis, his 45 goals would have put him tied for...

Photo by rjv541 In the history of the Washington Capitals, only one goalie has carried the team to the Stanley Cup Finals. That goalie retired today , after a decade in D.C. and a brief curtain call with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Olaf Kolzig may not play in the NHL any longer, but Caps fans will always remember him as one of the most dedicated, team-focused players in Washington history. Caps fans...

Eric Fehr Theme: “I ask not for a lighter burden, but for broader shoulders” Well, healthy ones, at least. That will be the key to Eric Fehr’s season, whether his off-season surgery on both joints allows him – finally – to taking that big step to being the scoring right wing the Capitals have lacked since… well, it’s been a long time (and no, we don’t...
