Monday night, in the 3-1 victory over Carolina at the RBC Center, Henrik Zetterberg started the game with Johan Franzen and Jiri Hudler. But midway through, coach Mike Babcock moved Mikael Samuelsson onto the line and put Hudler with Dan Cleary and Valtteri Filppula on the third line. Babcock said afterward he might try Cleary on the Zetterberg line.

Valtteri Filppula returned to the Wings' lineup on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena after missing the first two preseason games with a jammed thumb. He had a chance to tie the game in the final minute but was denied by goaltender Tuukka Rask. The Bruins went on to win, 2-1.

Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula and general manager Ken Holland both got what they wanted Wednesday. Filppula, 24, agreed to a five-year, $15-million contract to remain with the Wings through the 2012-13 season. The deal gives Filppula long-term security and allows the Wings to lock up a young forward with talent they hope only continues to grow.
