Goaltender Rick DiPietro isn't the only Islander who pushed to come back from offseason surgery in time to start the season, only to break down shortly after it began.

Jiggs McDonald, the Hall of Fame Islanders broadcaster, is stranded in Thailand because the Bangkok airport is closed as a result of the country's unrest. Protesters took over the airport this past week, just before McDonald, his wife and the rest of their tour party were scheduled to leave.

It's official. The Islanders really do have a bona fide, can't miss, hard-working quality goal scorer in their organization. Unfortunately for them, his hard work involves talking on the phone, meeting clients and chatting up the Islanders Business Club. Mike Bossy just isn't eligible for the Art Ross Trophy any more.

Back in June, the decision by Islanders general manager Garth Snow to trade down twice from the fifth spot in the NHL draft to select Windsor Spitfires center Josh Bailey with the ninth overall pick was met with boos from a Coliseum crowd attending a draft party. But there were cheers last night when the decision to keep Bailey on the roster rather than return him to juniors was announced before the...

In his third game off the injury list, defenseman Freddy Meyer IV could have changed the numeral after his name to No. 1 because he was first star of the Islanders' 4-2 victory over Ottawa last night at the Coliseum. Meyer assisted on the first goal and scored the next two as the Isles rebounded from two straight losses.

BOSTON - The third-period meltdown is fast becoming an Islanders trademark this season, but the one they experienced Friday at TD Banknorth Garden was different from the five others that preceded it. For one thing, there was no lead to blow. In this case, the Isles were hanging in a one-goal game by their fingernails and simply got steamrolled by a much bigger, much better Boston team.

As if blowing a lead of at least two goals for the fifth time this season in a Thanksgiving Eve loss to Pittsburgh wasn't bad enough, the schedule puts the Islanders in Boston for a noon game on Black Friday (a bad omen if ever there was one) against one of the NHL's hottest teams. Good luck trying to bounce back.

Personally, I feel that dancers have much sexier bods than models. Reason? They are not scarily thin and have very well-toned and proportional hot bodies. Here are some good examples taken from NHL dancers. For the first time this season, the Islanders had their top six defenseman intact and available with the return of Freddy Meyer against Pittsburgh last night at Nassau Coliseum. Meyer underwent sports hernia surgery on Halloween in Munich under the hand of Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck, who has performed the same operation on Dallas defenseman Sergei Zubov and other top athletes.

For most of two periods, Scott Gordon's "overspeed" Islanders offense had Pittsburgh on its heels looking at a 3-0 deficit. But Pittsburgh coach Michel Therrien has a switch he can flip to send the Penguins' offense into "hyperspeed," a gear the Islanders and most other teams in the NHL lack.
