Marian Hossa left millions of dollars on the table to play in Detroit. Dan Cleary could have hit the free agent jackpot but took less to stay in Detroit. The Red Wings kept Brad Stuart, even though he seemed destined to return to the West Coast. Detroit has stayed on top because it has kept its best players and persuaded others to join up.

The Detroit Red Wings signed defenseman Brad Stuart to a four-year contract on Tuesday. No other contract terms were released. The Red Wings obtained the 28-year-old Stuart from the Los Angeles Kings at the trade deadline last season in exchange for Detroit's second-round draft pick in 2008 and its fourth-round pick in 2009.

After getting the Brad Stuart contract finalized around 11:30 this morning, Red Wings general manager Ken Holland soon after got on the phone to agents for several unrestricted free agent forwards, and found a goalie, Ty Conklin, to push Jimmy Howard for the back-up role.
