Marian Hossa left millions of dollars on the table to play in Detroit. Dan Cleary could have hit the free agent jackpot but took less to stay in Detroit. The Red Wings kept Brad Stuart, even though he seemed destined to return to the West Coast. Detroit has stayed on top because it has kept its best players and persuaded others to join up.
