Isles host the Kings tonight while a good portion of the team battles the flu. If you had to pick three stars from the Islanders' 5-2 win Thursday night in Washington, there would be no shortage of candidates. Start with Bill Guerin's hat trick, and consider Bryan Berard's game-winning goal and two assists, goaltender Rick DiPietro's stellar play and defenseman Chris Campoli's four assists. Tough choice.

The Islanders put Jeff Tambellini on the ferry to Bridgeport and left free-agent defenseman Bryan Berard in limbo yesterday as they cut the roster to the NHL-maximum 23 players. But with two days left to Friday night's season opener in Buffalo, the Isles' locker room is more like a waiting room in the sense that it appears at least one more move is necessary to make room for Berard to sign.

Monday is decision day for Islanders general manager Garth Snow and coach Ted Nolan, and the players with the most to gain or lose appear to be free-agent defenseman Bryan Berard, who hopes to return to the Islanders for a second go-round as power-play quarterback, and Jeff Tambellini, who still is trying to kick his career into gear.

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal, Michael Peca finally has a job. But Bryan Berard, the first overall pick in the 1995 NHL entry draft, has swallowed his pride and will be going to the Islanders as a training camp invite, literally begging for a job. And how about Jeff Friesen, Mike Johnson, Jeff O’Neill and Danny Markov? They're all veteran free agents still waving the “Needs Work” sign with...
