When I earlier wrote about the Philadelphia Flyers decision to create salary cap room by placing Derian Hatcher on the long term injury exemption list, it touched on the problem that many injuries are hard to properly quantify. Most longterm NHL players suffer from a chronic or degenerative condition of some sort that could be considered an injury if it is convenient to do so and could be played through...

Derian Hatcher will not be on the ice when Flyers' training camp opens Saturday. But that does not mean the Flyers are going to force him into retirement. Instead, Hatcher's name will appear on the roster for the first game of the season and then immediately be moved to the long-term injury list.

from Wayne Fish at phillyBurbs, He insists there are ways to be creative. But that’s basically GM-speak for possible salary dumps — either the trade of another veteran or getting another older player such as Derian Hatcher to join Sami Kapanen in retirement. Even though Holmgren has added four defensemen in the past week (including Tuesday’s deal for Janne Niskala of Nashville), only one of those (Steve...

Defensemen Jason Smith and Derian Hatcher probably used up every syringe the Flyers' medical staff had at its disposal this season, particularly in the playoffs.

Derian Hatcher makes a perfectly good defensive play on Evgeni Malkin. Gets right in his face, stops him cold. Ludicrous penalty call (assuming CBC viewers were shown the actual infraction) ensues. Faced with replay of perfectly good defensive play, CBC analyst/fabulist Greg Millen adopts patented "Can't do that in the new NHL!" smug-man voice and declares it a dead-obvious holding penalty. Which...

from Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Daily News, Derian Hatcher has arguably been the Flyers’ best defenseman in the playoffs. If not, then Kimmo Timonen has. So far in this series with Montreal, we have seen a sucker punch with intent to injure on Timonen go unpunished, and in last night's harrowing 3-2 Flyers victory, we watched Hatcher get thrown out of the third period of a playoff game for a...

When you add a player like Derian Hatcher to the lineup, you get a ton of playoff experience, but you also have to take someone out.

Bruce Boudreau just addressed the media--for the second time in six hours--and nothing has changed from this morning's pre-game skate. There are, however, a couple of lineup changes to report regarding the Flyers: Defenseman Derian Hatcher will play after missing a month with a broken leg, and left wing Patrick Thoresen (groin trauma) will be a game time decision, I'm told....Please click on the title...
