When Montreal's Tom Kostopoulos was suspended three games yesterday for his hit on Maple Leafs defenceman Mike Van Ryn, the reaction from the Toronto camp suggested the time has come for the NHL to crack down on dangerous hits to the head.

Canadiens winger Tom Kostopoulos has received a three-game suspension for having hit Leafs defenceman Mike Van Ryn from behind in that rather shame-making 6-3 defeat Saturday night. Kostopoulos has apologized while saying he hadn't intended to injure anybody.

Montreal Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos was suspended for three games without pay by the NHL on Monday for his check on Toronto defenseman Mike Van Ryn. Van Ryn sustained a concussion and broken nose and hand. He is expected to be out at least a month. Kostopoulos received a five-minute boarding penalty and game misconduct when he hit Van Ryn from behind during the Maple Leafs' 6-3 win Saturday....

Here's video of the hit last night by Tom Kostopolous on Mike Van Ryn. A more proper term would be assault because at no point in that play does Kostopolous do anything else than try to injure Van Ryn. Now a guy that was making Fletcher look great for offloading McCabe and replacing him with a younger and more defensively sound version is out for at least a month.
